Well did William Pinkney, who eloquently, but vainly, remonstrated against the passage of the Act, predict that the day, which witnessed the degradation of St. John's College, in the very dawn of its promise, would prove the darkest day Maryland had known, for by this Act her citizens were deprived at once of a College to which they could point with pride for what it had already done, and with hope for the greater good it might do in the future.
