Excerpt from Appendix to the Journals of the Senate and Assembly of the Twenty-Second Session of the Legislature of the State of California, Vol. 1 During the last session of the Legislature I was required by com mittees from both Houses to furnish them, from time to time, with statements showing the expenses of the State under the control of this department, during that session, as compared to expenses of former sessions; and having been compelled to make these state ments at a time when the whole force of the office was employed to the full extent of its capacity, I have considered it advisable, and not inappropriate, to place this information in such a form that it can the more readily be obtained by adding to each branch of this Report a statement showing the expenses for similar purposes that had accrued during the corresponding nineteen months of the pre ceding administration.
