Defines the emerging field of catalytic reaction synthesis in the search for new catalysts and catalytic processes. Illustrates how experimental data from diverse sources can be consolidated to form a quantitative description of the essential chemistry taking place on the catalyst surface. Elucidates the possible relationships between catalyst kinetic properties and surface chemical bonding properties. Offers examples of microkinetic analysis and catalytic reaction synthesis for a variety of catalytic reactions over metals, oxides, and zeolite catalysts. Illustrates the underlying strategy used to formulate a microkinetic model, calibrate the model to the existing experimental data, and assess the critical aspects of the essential surface chemistry involved in the catalytic process.

Homogeneous Hydrogenation and Metathesis Reactions, a volume in the Advances in Catalysis series, covers hydrogenation and metathesis reactions in two separate sections. The first section is devoted to homogeneous hydrogenation reactions and related processes, including hydrogenation of alkenes, esters, olefins, etc. In the second section, the metathesis reactions of olefins, alkenes, and alkynes are presented. In addition, the industrial application of homogeneous metathesis reactions is investigated. Includes thermodynamic and kinetic studies of homogeneous catalysts Describes transition metal, ligand and solvent role in homogeneous catalysts Explains preparation, characterization, deactivation and regeneration of homogeneous catalysts Presents homogeneous catalysts by clusters, carbenes, fixed metal-complexes, and liquid-liquid multiphase catalysts

Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest for various gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals and fuels, N2 fixation for the synthesis of NH3 or NOx, methane conversion into higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates. It is also widely used for air pollution control (e.g., VOC remediation). Plasma catalysis allows thermodynamically difficult reactions to proceed at ambient pressure and temperature, due to activation of the gas molecules by energetic electrons created in the plasma. However, plasma is very reactive but not selective, and thus a catalyst is needed to improve the selectivity. In spite of the growing interest in plasma catalysis, the underlying mechanisms of the (possible) synergy between plasma and catalyst are not yet fully understood. Indeed, plasma catalysis is quite complicated, as the plasma will affect the catalyst and vice versa. Moreover, due to the reactive plasma environment, the most suitable catalysts will probably be different from thermal catalysts. More research is needed to better understand the plasma–catalyst interactions, in order to further improve the applications.

This book presents both the fundamentals concepts and latestachievements of a field that is growing in importance since itrepresents a possible solution for global energy problems. It focuses on an atomic-level understanding ofheterogeneous catalysis involved in important energy conversionprocesses. It presents a concise picture for the entire areaof heterogeneous catalysis with vision at the atomic- and nano-scales, from synthesis, ex-situ and in-situ characterization, catalytic activity and selectivity, to mechanistic understandingbased on experimental exploration and theoretical simulation. The book: Addresses heterogeneous catalysis, one of the crucialtechnologies employed within the chemical and energyindustries Presents the recent advances in the synthesis andcharacterization of nanocatalysts as well as a mechanisticunderstanding of catalysis at atomic level for important processesof energy conversion Provides a foundation for the potential design ofrevolutionarily new technical catalysts and thus the furtherdevelopment of efficient technologies for the global energyeconomy Includes both theoretical studies and experimentalexploration Is useful as both a textbook for graduate and undergraduatestudents and a reference book for scientists and engineers inchemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering

This publication contains full papers of both oral and poster presentations of the symposium "Immobilized Cells: Basics and Applications" that was held in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, 26-29 November 1995. This volume covers recent developments in the field of immobilization e.g.: new support materials, characterization of support materials, kinetic characterizations, dynamic modelling, bioreactor types, scale up and applications are also given. Applications in the field of medicine, fermentation technology, food technology and environmental technology are described. Guidelines for research with immobilized cells. Based on the scientific sessions a strategy of research and methods for characterization of immobilized cells, especially in view of applications are given. The goal was to relate basic research to applications and to extract guidelines for characterization of immobilized cells in view of process design and application from the contributions. The manuscripts presented in these proceedings give an extensive and recent overview of the research and applications of immobilized-cell technology.

Until now, the literature has offered a rather limited approach to the use of fundamental kinetics and their application to catalytic reactions. Subsequently, this book spans the full range from fundamentals of kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis via modern experimental and theoretical results of model studies to their equivalent large-scale industrial production processes. The result is key knowledge for students at technical universities and professionals already working in industry. '... such an enterprise will be of great value to the community, to professionals as well as graduate and undergraduate students attempting to move into the field of modern catalysis and kinetics. I strongly recommend you publish this book based on the proposal.' - Prof. Dr. G. A. Samorjai, University of California 'Both authors are well respected specialists, with a very long record of original top-quality work and an international reputation. A book from these authors will be considered an authoritative piece of work, I definitely support this project and I am looking forward to use the book when published.' - Prof. Dr. D. E. Resasco, University of Oklahoma 'I wholly support the proposed project. The authors are very competent young colleagues and there is a real need for such a textbook' - Prof. Dr. G. Ertl, Fritz-Haber-Institut, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin
