Members of INAP, the International Network on Innovative Apprenticeship, and VETNET, the Vocational Education and Training Network, have contributed key research findings to this detailed survey of the field. A Way of Life is an extraordinary record of the eighteen months that Lois Gottlieb spent with Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Fellowship in the late 1940s. Wright started the Fellowship in 1932 during the depression era when he had little or no work and thought it a worthwhile idea to train young architects. The apprentices came from all sorts of backgrounds and many different countries. Some of them joined the Fellowship because they had seen Wright's work, others because they had read his autobiography. All of them wanted to be involved with his new architecture and to emulate his approach, which was to make all aspects of living more beautiful and compatible with the environment. Taliesin was Wright's home and farm and Taliesin West in Arizona was his escape from the severe Wisconsin winters. Apprenticeship or vocational training is a subject of lively debate. Economic historians tend to see apprenticeship as a purely economic phenomenon, as an 'incomplete contract' in need of legal and institutional enforcement mechanisms. The contributors to this volume have adopted a broader perspective. They regard learning on the shop floor as a complex social and cultural process, to be situated in an ever-changing historical context. The results are surprising. The authors convincingly show that research on apprenticeship and learning on the shop floor is intimately associated with migration patterns, family economy and household strategies, gender perspectives, urban identities and general educational and pedagogical contexts. Bert De Munck is Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where he teaches social and economic history of the early modern period, history and social theory, and European ethnology and heritage. The current trend in the education of young architects is moving from the handi-craft based apprenticeships of the past toward the theoretical and the "idea" and has created a professional perception that shies away from the construction aspect of building. In the United States, there is no longer a reverence for materials and their connections like that in Europe. Handi-crafts such as woodworking and metalworking are now seen as manual labor and are no longer seen as a beneficial component of architectural education. The field of architecture is at a point of stagnation, the popularity of architects is reaching high levels and the visibility has grown considerably, yet the focus of design is still on the overall concept and not on how the building is to be constructed. Only by teaching and experiencing construction and its techniques will the profession make progress toward a more critical building process.
