Karl von Braun, the last Prussian, is born into an historical period of political and national turmoil, and is morally trapped between Prussian tradition and National Socialism. Various scholars have labored to explain the reasons for the rise of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism. This fictional novel considers the depression that followed World War I, philosophical principles, the effects of the Treaty of Versailles, and the tradition of Prussian militarism.
