A pesquisa analisa as transformações no olhar de alunos adultos em sua passagem pela escola. O foco do trabalho está no papel da Educação Estética para jovens e adultos - tratada como Educação do Olhar. Ao mesmo tempo que afirma a necessidade de uma Educação Estética para esse público, o trabalho examina os efeitos que esse tipo de escolarização provoca na visão de mundo de um adulto e de que forma contribui para os seus processos de letramento. A natureza do estudo é qualitativa e ele foi realizado no Curso Supletivo do Colégio Santa Cruz, uma escola particular localizada na cidade de São Paulo, que oferece cursos de Educação de Jovens e Adultos. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são alunos que freqüentaram a fase inicial do Ensino Médio, durante 2004 e 2005. A autora atuou como professora e pesquisadora, concomitantemente, deste grupo de alunos. O trabalho é fundamentado na Fenomenologia e nos estudos do filósofo Maurice Merleau-Ponty. A análise dos dados é realizada à luz de uma compreensão da Estética tangível a todas as áreas do conhecimento humano e propõe procedimentos metodológicos que evidenciem os aspectos estéticos dos conhecimentos produzidos nas diferentes disciplinas, como um meio para atingir os aspectos mais conceituais desses saberes. A pesquisa analisa também um projeto pedagógico, considerado estético, e demonstra como o trabalho coletivo na escola de jovens e adultos, por meio de projetos centrados nas relações entre as disciplinas, contribui efetivamente para reunir conhecimentos prévios dos alunos e conhecimentos escolares, desenvolver práticas sociais de uso da escrita e promover a formação de indivíduos plenamente letrados.
