During the past 20 years there have been amazing developments in low temperature physics, engineering, and biology. They form part of the very rapid post-war growth in pure and applied sciences of every kind. During this period several branches of biology including immunology, molecular biology and, of course, cryobiology, have split off from their parent disciplines. One result of this splintering has been the development of separate jargons used by the specialists and sometimes incomprehensible to those working in closely allied fields. The pure physicists, chemists, and the applied scientists, including physicians, surgeons, and pathologists, find the new jargons particularly baffling. We have attempted in this monograph to present to cryogenic engineers a picture of cryobiologists and their problems using as few strange technical words as possible. We hope that this book will help to bridge the gap which has already formed between them in spite of the opportunities for collaboration in many projects. We hope that it may also be useful to scientific research workers and postgraduate students of many kinds united only by curiosity about cryobiology. We are very much indebted to Dr. K. Mendelssohn, who insti gated us to produce a monograph and who reassured us that cryogenic engineers are as keen to understand the current trends in biology, and particularly in cryobiology, as we are to enlist their help. We have had much help in preparing this book.

This completely updated and enlarged third edition of the classic text adopts a practical approach to describe the fundamentals of freeze-drying, backed by many explanatory examples. Following an introduction to the fundamentals, the book goes on to discuss process and plant automation as well as methods to transfer pilot plant qualifications and process data to production. An entire section is devoted to a large range of different pharmaceutical, biological, and medical products. New to this edition are chapters on antibodies, freeze-dry microscopy, TEMPRIS, microwave freeze-drying, spray freeze-drying, and PAT. Their many years of experience in freeze-drying enable the authors to supply valuable criteria for the selection of laboratory, pilot and production plants, discussing the advantages, drawbacks and limitations of different plant designs. Alongside guidelines for the evaluation and qualification of plants and processes, the author also includes a troubleshooting section.

Many modern pharmaceutical and biological products, e.g. blood derivatives, vaccines, cytostatic drugs, antibiotics, bacteria cultures but also consumer goods such as soluble coffee are freeze-dried to transform perishable substances into a form that can be stored and reconstituted to their almost original state without loss of quality. The book describes the up-to-date fundamentals of freeze-drying, not just presenting the process in all its seven steps theoretically, but explaining it with many practical examples. Many years of experience in freeze-drying allow the authors to supply valuable criteria for the selection of laboratory, pilot and production plants, discussing the advantages, drawbacks and limitations of different plant designs. In this second, completely revised edition, process and plant automation are introduced in a separate section and methods to transfer pilot plant qualifications and process data to production are presented. The guidelines for process and plant evaluation and qualifications have been updated and enlarged. Trouble shooting is concentrated in a section of its own and literature has been updated with 100 new quotations to include references as recent as 2002, and 100 new tables and figures have been added.

1965 Transactions of the Third International Vacuum Congress, Volume 1: Invited Papers is the first of two-volumes that review the state of knowledge in vacuum technology. The present volume comprises the opening address by Prof Auwárter and the twelve comprehensive main lectures. In keeping with the purpose of an international congress, the organizers took great pains to ensure that the choice of topics for the main lectures not only covered the scientific fundamentals as a whole, but also gave appropriate consideration to the technical applications. An analysis of the submitted topics shows that the strong points of research and development lie in the fields of ""Coating and Thin Layers"", ""Adsorption and Desorption,"" and ""Pressure Measurement and Leak Detection"". In the fields of application, ""Vacuum Metallurgy"" ranks highly. The papers published in the transactions originate from many European and overseas countries, proof that vacuum science is not only keenly pursued in all major industrial countries, but also that the new organizational form of the IUVSTA is capable of winning the services of all these countries for fruitful international cooperation in the vacuum field.
