The letters refer to their mutual literary interests. Many discuss Thomas Wright's situation and Halliwell-Phillipps' help. (7) mentions a newspaper criticism of Charles Kean's acting of Hamlet. (10) discusses Shakespeare as an actor. (145, 155) mention Furnivall and a criticism of Mr. Browning and the New Shakspere Society that appeared in the Saturday review concerning the "Pigsbrook" controversy.
