Autograph Stampless Folded Letter Signed from William C. Pierce, Chester, Vermont to Ira F. Prouty, Saxtons River, Vermont, about Studying Medicine in Woodstock and Asking to be Roommates

Book Description

William C. Pierce of Chester, Vermont, writes to Dr. Ira F. Prouty, whom he calls “Friend Prouty”, in Saxtons River, Rockingham, Vermont ,18 February 1863. Pierce has not heard a response from Prouty: “I have waited in vain to hear something from thee [and I] have concluded to forward you a line informing you that my tour to Maine is likely to terminate at Woodstock. Have been advised so to do & have concluded to try a course at that institution”, presumably referring to Vermont Medical College. He appears set to transfer to Woodstock (which he calls “W”) from his present situation: “But in doing so I am aware that I shall sacrifice popularity at the shrine of present pecuniary interest – However, as correct information is my object & I am told that can be accomplished at W as well as at any other institution in the country, have concluded to make the sacrifice & time must determine the merit or demerit of my choice. Should be pleased with your company as fellow student & room mate if you can bring your mind to bear upon the thing. Have seven days more to continue in my school – Success so far has attended my efforts. Believe the Lectures commence at W the first Wednesday in March. Please write to me on the receipt of this.”
