In the 1960s and ’70s, architects, influenced by recent developments in computing and the rise of structuralist and poststructuralist thinking, began to radically rethink how architecture could be created. Though various new approaches gained favor, they had one thing in common: they advocated moving away from the traditional reliance on an individual architect’s knowledge and instincts and toward the use of external tools and processes that were considered objective, logical, or natural. Automatic architecture was born. The quixotic attempts to formulate such design processes extended modernist principles and tried to draw architecture closer to mathematics and the sciences. Quantifying Aesthetics of Visual Design Applied to Automatic Design

In this thesis, the author makes several contributions to the study of design of graphical materials. The thesis begins with a review of the relationship between design and aesthetics, and the use of mathematical models to capture this relationship. Then, a novel method for linking linguistic concepts to colors using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation Dual Topic Model is proposed. Next, the thesis studies the relationship between aesthetics and spatial layout by formalizing the notion of visual balance. Applying principles of salience and Gaussian mixture models over a body of about 120,000 aesthetically rated professional photographs, the author provides confirmation of Arnhem's theory about spatial layout. The thesis concludes with a description of tools to support automatically generating personalized design.

This book describes the design experience of automatic machines and the theoretical background for controlling them. Unlike the existing literature, it includes design concepts and their relationship with the dynamic behavior of automated devices, and links the dynamic response of the machine elements with the actuators that constitute an automatic machine. As such, it demonstrates that it is vital to properly model any automatic machine as a single system and find the final response to have a good design and control scheme. The introduction describes the background for designing automatic machines, their uniqueness in machine design, and the need to understand dynamic behavior. The following chapters provide the background for modeling multibody systems, examples of typical automatic machines, and the basis for determining the dynamic response of the most common actuators (motor, pneumatic, and hydraulic pistons and valves).
