This book describes the latest progress in the application of nanotechnology for water treatment and purification. Leaders in the field present both the fundamental science and a comprehensive overview of the diverse range of tools and technologies that have been developed in this critical area. Expert chapters present the unique physicochemical and surface properties of nanoparticles and the advantages that these provide for engineering applications that ensure a supply of safe drinking water for our growing population. Application areas include generating fresh water from seawater, preventing contamination of the environment and creating effective and efficient methods for remediation of polluted waters. The chapter authors are leading world-wide experts in the field with either academic or industrial experience, ensuring that this comprehensive volume presents the state-of-the-art in the integration of nanotechnology with water treatment and purification.

It was intended to return with the International Gothenburg Symposia every other time to the birthplace of these events, Gothenburg in Sweden. But instead the 8th symposium has been invited to be organized and held in Prague, i. e. in the midst of Central and Eastern Europe a region now keen on intensified environmental control. This attests that the symposia have attained such standing in the interna tional world of operators, designers, officers and researchers in water treatment technology that their presence in various parts of the world has been requested. And this ever growing significance, in short the success of this conference series, stems form the fact that the symposia offer a unique platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences on all aspects of water and wastewater treatment between administrators, engineers and scientists. The content of this book, i. e. the schedule of the symposium lectures, results for the most part from a vast response to an international call for papers. Many excellent contributions are included in this volume but at the same time many outstanding ones could not be included for lack of time and space. The total sum of these contributions document again the development in the field, both in terms of new technological (and other) developments as well as public and administrative acceptance and approval of solutions offered.

The report highlights various types of SBRs, design considerations and procedures, equipment required, and experiences gained from practical applications. This report will help both designers and operators of SBRs understand how to use this technology successfully. The focus is on the application of fill-and-draw, variable volume, periodically operated, unsteady-state principles to activated sludge systems. Research findings are presented, from both the laboratory and pilot and full scale SBRs. Also included is a description of trends for technological developments and a discussion of open questions regarding research, development, application, and operation. Contents Introduction Fundamentals of Periodic Processes General Overview of SBR Applications Design of Activated Sludge SBR Plants Equipment and Instrumentation Practical Experiences Evaluation of SBR Facilities in Australia Evaluation of SBR Facilities in the USA and Canada Evaluation of SBR Facilities in Germany Evaluation of SBR Facilities in France Evaluation of SBR facilities in Japan Scientific and Technical Report No. 10

Technology now affects almost every aspect of Water Supply Management, Operation, Planning and Design; the speed of development means that assessing what is "new" is sometimes difficult. Old ideas can now be applied because of new technology; technology is now revealing problems that were unnoticed 10 years ago. Some emerging technologies promise much but are still underdeveloped for use in real world conditions, while we should always remember that "new" technology depends upon the state of development in respective countries, a point which is particularly relevant to the NATO Advanced Study Institute, for which this book has been produced. Thus our objective in producing the book has been to highlight, in a wide range of technical areas, where and how technology is being applied, what is "new" and what the limitations of these technologies are in the real world. We have also tried to provide an European and American perspective where possible to illustrate how problems are tackled in different cultural environments. It is probably true that "technology" is also somewhat dependent upon the political, economic and organisational climate in different countries and we have included a chapter covering these aspects.
