This is the first book to provide a molecular level explanation of how the senses work, linking molecular biology with sensory physiology to deduce the molecular mechanism of a key step in sensory signal generation. The editors have assembled expert authors from all fields of sensory physiology for an authoritative overview of the mechanisms of sensory signal transduction in both animals and plants. They systematically cover phototransduction, chemosensory transduction, mechanotransduction, temperature and pain perception, as well as specialized receptors for electrical and magnetic signals. Required reading for biologists, physiologists and medical researchers with an interest in sensory physiology.

This handbook provides a thorough account of recent directions in membrane channel research. Each subject is covered in terms of channel biophysics, pharmacology, and molecular biology. The introductory chapter reviews methodologies of molecular biology currently used for studying molecular structure and function of membrane channels and specific domains in channel proteins.

This is a Ph.D. dissertation. Almost everything we do is controlled by Ca2+, how we move, how our hearts beat and how our brains process information and store memories. Ca2+ is indeed a ubiquitous second messenger involved in a diversity of cellular activities such as muscular contraction, neurotransmitter release, synaptic plasticity, gene transcription, cell proliferation and apoptosis. The average cytosolic concentration of Ca2+ in resting cells ranges from 50nM to 100nM, reaching values close to 1uM when the cell is stimulated by a variety of physiological stimuli, while in the extracellular milieu this concentration is about 1mM. This large concentration gradient allows intracellular Ca2+ to work as a useful second messenger. Contents include: General Introduction, Objectives, Results, General Discussion, Summary.

First published in 1999, this much expanded and updated edition of the best-selling handbook Astrophotography for the Amateur provides a complete guide to taking pictures of stars, galaxies, the Moon, the Sun, comets, meteors and eclipses, using equipment and materials readily available to the hobbyist. In this new edition, the book has been completely revised and now includes new chapters on computer image processing and CCD imaging; expanded advice on choosing cameras and telescopes; completely updated information about the films; a much larger bibliography; and hundreds of new photographs (in colour, and black and white) demonstrating the latest equipment and techniques. Astrophotography for the Amateur has become the standard handbook for all amateur astronomers. This expanded and updated edition provides an ideal introduction for beginners and a complete handbook for advanced amateurs. It will also appeal to photography enthusiasts who can discover how to take spectacular images with only modest equipment.
