Stories, Storytellers, and Storytelling

Book Description

This book advances social scientific interest in a field long dominated by the humanities: stories, and storytelling. Stories are a whole lot more than entertainment; oral narratives, novels, films and immersive video games all form part of the sociocultural discourses which we are enmeshed in, and use to co-construct our beliefs about the world around us. Young children use them to learn about the world beyond their immediate sensory experience and, even in an era of interactive electronic media, the bedtime story remains a cherished part of most children’s daily routine. Storytelling is thus the first abstract formal learning method we encounter as human beings. It is also probably transcultural; perhaps even an immanent part of the human condition. Narratives are, at heart, sequences of events and presuppose and reinforce particular cause-and-effect relationships. Inevitably, they also construct unconscious biases, prejudices, and discriminatory attitudes. Storying (a term we use in this book to encompass stories, storytellers and storytelling) is complex, and this book seeks to make sense of it.

The Ragman

Book Description

This story was based on a collection of the author¿s actual experiences and stories told to him by friends and family. Schillaci needed to tell the story to future family members and decided about 20 years ago to bring this book to fruition. Schillaci had the opportunity to learn about the dress industry first hand. He worked beside his dad for over 15 years. The one important principal that he learned was to treat your employees with respect. Your success or failure was based on their loyalty. Schillaci¿s dad captured the loyalty of most of the people that worked under him. Schillaci¿s dad was a remarkable individual who went against all odds to become an American success story. His character and dedication to family and friends was a major factor in his success in business. As a child it was not very obvious what Schillaci¿s dad had to overcome to support his family. As the author grew older, the realization was overwhelming. Hence, the idea to put his life into words for all to see. Schillaci will never be able to express the real character and personality of Rocky Schillaci. But for those who knew him they will attest to his special persona. For all of the future Schillacis, it will simply be a way to attest to a great man and his accomplishments. Hopefully some of these genes will spread through the generations to come. In future years for those family members who need to find the will to pursue their goals, Rocky can be their inspiration. With all his love, the author presents this manuscript in honor of a great man and the successful son of a Sicilian immigrant.

The Story Edge

Book Description

A holistic approach to innovation, connection, and problem-solving that has no expiration date. Our stories allow us to explore our greatest desires and fears, connect with others on a deeper level, and gain a sense of clarity and purpose. In an era of chaotic change and high-pressure decision-making, Kindra Hall—author of Stories That Stick—has a message that runs counter to much of the business acumen of the day: Now more than ever, good storytelling is a critical part of successful leadership. From corporate initiatives and marketing strategies to scientific research and innovation, stories are the key ingredient to engaging audiences, building consensus, and inspiring action. The Story Edge will show you: Why storytelling is an essential part of being human. How to find and leverage the story in every situation. How to use story as a tool for positive social impact. How to craft your story in order to leave a lasting legacy. Hall masterfully interweaves storytelling theory with practical business scenarios, creating an engaging guide for present and future leaders. You'll learn how to embrace the art of storytelling and how to consider all angles of the story in every situation. If there's one thing that will remain true—despite all the transformations we experience in business, culture, and innovation—it's the importance of story. Why? Because story is the original algorithm, the true universal language. And it's one of the most important tools we, as humans, have.
