Mr. Hairston Sr., who lives in Cleveland Heights, is a high school teacher in the East Cleveland City School District. He said the idea for the book came when he was teaching second and third graders in East Cleveland School District several years ago. On each day he will draw a picture of a bear on the board participating in some type of activity, and posted the class recess time in the drawings. In the process, he found out that some children werent aware of some activities, while others poked fun of the activity that were not their own. Hairston realized he could incorporate this instruction into an activity book (Rose Bear Plays Baseball). His interest is golf, oil painting, and writing. He earned a B.A. in Industrial Engineering Technology (Manufacturing) and a minor in Studio Art from Kent State University.
