Bhumika

Book Description

What could Sita have been without Rama? Spending her last days in a remote ashram, a tired and greying Sita can’t help but wonder, ‘What if...?’ What if she hadn’t married Rama? What if she hadn’t gone into exile with him? What if she hadn’t been kidnapped by Ravana, and waited patiently for Rama to rescue her, ever the dutiful wife? What if she hadn’t returned with him to Ayodhya, only to be later discarded to ‘preserve his honour’? Until one day Sage Vishwamitra arrives and shows her who she might have been had she not met Rama – Bhumika, a queen who defies convention. Aditya Iyengar’s latest novel is an original tale of two enigmatic women, Sita and Bhumika, secure in their choices but not defined by them. Provocative, layered and moving, this is a narrative that will resonate with generations to come.

You Ask, I Tell

Book Description

The rise to stardom and tragic fall of one of the heroines of Indian film. Hansa Wadkar (born Ratan Bhalchandra) was one of Maharashtra’s best known stage and screen personalities. By the time she was married — to a much older family friend and impresario when she was just 15 — she had already starred in nine or ten movies and was becoming a name in the film world. Supporting her family on her earnings, her brother sick with malaria, and both parents having taken to drink, life was not easy for the young woman. But Hansa was not only beautiful and immensely talented, she was tough, wilful, capricious and headstrong. Her autobiography, Sangtye Aika published in 1970 and translated into English here for the first time, created a sensation for its frankness and boldness. It was later made into a film, Bhumika, by the legendary director Shyam Benegal and starred Smita Patil in the title role. Published by Zubaan.

In Gujarat, These Losses Are Accompanied With A Desire To Become Proper Hindus By Adopting A More Monolithic Hindu Identity And By Denying Their Sindhiness . Using Intergenerational Voices And Combining History With Personal Narratives, Kothari S Book Examines The Phenomena Of Psychological Violence During And After Partition, And Explores A Different Facet Of Partition Studies. Going Beyond Partition Studies, This Book Also Makes An Important Contribution To The Area Of Identity Politics In Contemporary India.
