Big Game Shooting in Alaska (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Big Game Shooting in Alaska In submitting this small work to the criticisms of brother sportsmen, or others of the reading public into whose hands it may fall, it is the earnest desire of the author that the following facts may be borne in mind during its perusal: Firstly, that it is not the outcome of a wild desire on the part of the writer to rush into print and air his own views on certain matters, or to lay down, after spending only one season in Alaska, any hard and fast rules as to the habits of certain kinds of game, and the best mode of killing them. Such a mistake is only too common on the part of many young sportsmen, and even of others of more mature years in search of small notoriety. Men of far greater experience on the same subjects hesitate to express any opinion, or to place on record in print any of their own ideas, for fear of appearing ridiculous in the eyes of a very few who may know more about these matters than the writers themselves. Big Game Shooting, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Big Game Shooting, Vol. 1 A few lines only are necessary to explain the object with which these volumes are put forth. There is no modern encyclopaedia to which the inexperienced man, who seeks guidance in the practice of the various British Sports and Pastimes, can turn for information. Some books there are on Hunting, some on Racing, some on Lawn Tennis, some on Fishing, and so on but one Library, or succession of volumes, which treats of the Sports and Pastimes indulged in by Englishmen - and women - is wanting. The Badminton Library is offered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Good Hunting

Book Description

Excerpt from Good Hunting: In Pursuit of Big Game in the West It is interesting, also, to remember that the influence of the author has been con stantly exerted in favor of the preserva tion of big game and the maintenance of national parks and forest reserves, which, in addition to other advantages, include the protection of these noble forms of animal life. This series of articles upon big-game hunting was written for H arper's Round Table, and published therein in 1897. The picture of ranch-life which forms the closing chapter appeared in H arper's Round Table in 1896. These articles are now presented together in book form for the first time after consultation with the author. For the title of the book and the proof-reading the publishers are te sponsible. American Big-Game Hunting

Book Description

Excerpt from American Big-Game Hunting: The Book of the Boone and Crockett Club In behalf of game protection the Club works through the State for the procuring and setting apart of reservations where for ests and game alike shall be protected at all seasons by the law. These great forest reservations thus become the nurseries and breeding-grounds of game and of the large wild animals which are elsewhere inevitably exterminated by the march of settlement. Already several such reservations have been established in different States, both by Na tional and by State action - for instance, the Adirondack Reserve in New York, the Col orado Canon Reserve in Arizona, the big timber reserves in Colorado and Washing ton, the island set apart in Alaska as an undisturbed breeding-ground for salmon and sea-fowl, the Yosemite Valley and the Se. Big Game Shooting on the Equator (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Big Game Shooting on the Equator Sport in East Africa can hardly be said to be within the reach Of a poor man unless he is a resident, in which case opportunities will occur without much expense but the traveller must face a certain outlay in connection with the equipment Of his caravan, and is warned not to be too Spartan or to run risks Of exposure, for, excellent as the climate is, the dangers of both sunstroke and chill are very real and very terrible to the imprudent. Financially East African travelling has this advantage, that you know the expense beforehand. The cost of a caravan can be caleu lated, and once it is paid for, it is impossible to spend money when on the march. Hunting in the Wilderness

Book Description

Excerpt from Hunting in the Wilderness: Big Game Hunting North of the Amazon I have always held the opinion that South America has created a gap in the annals of big game hunting in the world. Many excellent works have been produced on the subject in Africa, Asia and North America, but relatively little has been said of the opportunities present to shooters South of the Panama. Practical Rifle Shooting (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Practical Rifle Shooting In my first book on Revolver Shooting, (published in 1901), I drew attention to the dangerous consequences which a nation may incur when excessive devotion to such games as cricket, golf and football, leads its men to ignore the art of handling firearms. Many partisans of these games were indignant at my remarks, but two regrettable wars have had a salutary influence in this respect. Public opinion now endorses my doctrine of the absolute necessity that every able-bodied man should be able to bring at least as much skill to the handling of a rifle as he evinces with the cricket bat or golf club. A second desideratum mooted in my book - that advancing civilisation ought to subordinate the arbitrament of arms to the decisions of an international Court of Arbitration, has, unfortunately, not been fulfilled as yet, though matters are trending that way. Until it is so fulfilled, men must be taught the proper handling of a rifle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
