Modeled after the Mack V. Wright 1920 film version, the 1949 western television series The Lone Ranger made Clayton Moore's masked character one of the most recognized in American popular culture. Other westerns followed and by 1959 there were 32 being shown daily on prime time television. While much research has been carried out on both TV formats and remakes in the English-speaking world, almost nothing has been published on the huge and dynamic Spanish-speaking sector. This book discusses and analyses series since 2000 from Spain (in both Spanish and Catalan), Mexico, Venezuela, and (to a lesser extent) the US, employing both empirical research on production and distribution and textual analysis of content. The three genres examined are horror, biographical series, and sports-themed dramas; the three examples of format remakes are of a period mystery (Spain, Mexico), a romantic comedy (Venezuela, US), and a historical epic (Catalonia, Spain). During the 1950s, however, there was a Golden Age of Television - live electronic theater based in New York and broadcast to living rooms across the country. This book is the first biography of the man who did the most to make that Golden Age possible: Fred Coe (1914-1979). Coe, the greatest producer of this era, was the mastermind of Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse, the best of a crop of live New York dramatic anthologies that included Studio One, Kraft Television Theatre, and Robert Montgomery Presents. Born in a small town in the Mississippi Delta and raised in Nashville, Coe went on to nourish such impressive talents as writers Paddy Chayefsky, Horton Foote, Tad Mosel, and JP Miller, directors Delbert Mann and Arthur Penn, and countless major actors. Among the enduring live dramas he produced are "The Days of Wine and Roses" (for Playhouse 90), "Marty," and "The Trip to Bountiful" (for Philco-Goodyear); Mary Martin's acclaimed Peter Pan; and the situation comedy Mr. Peepers.
