Letting My Light Shine

Book Description

"Let your light so shine before men, that they will see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" (Matt. 5:16). That is Nancy Petrey's life verse, which provides the title for this, her sixth book. Nancy is a recorded pianist, as well as serving as a church pianist. From age 5 to age 78, her life has been filled with music. One of the major ways she has let her light shine for Jesus is through music, but there is much more to her story than music. Included are ministry times in churches with her husband Curtis and ministry as a "Mizpah for Israel." Nancy recalls her musical exploits in high school, college, and in her career as a choral teacher in public schools, community musician, church choir director, composer, singer, and pianist. In varied settings, she learned to "bloom where she was planted," even resorting to comedy routines. Nancy writes about her hearing impairment and the miracles God did for her. At the end of the book are some original musical compositions, all based on the Bible. Nancy lives in Petrey, Alabama. She became a widow two years ago. She and Curtis have four children and 17 grandchildren. This book will be of interest to anyone interested in music, and wants to read about a life lived as a witness for Jesus.

Come Matter Here

Book Description

Come Matter Here is a call to stop putting your life on hold until "someday" and start digging your heels into the here and now to build the life God has designed for you. Life is scary. Adulting is hard. When faced with the challenges of building a life of your own, it's all too easy to stake your hope and happiness in "someday." But what if the dotted lines on the map at your feet today mattered just as much as the destination you dream of? Hannah Brencher, TED Talk speaker and founder of The World Needs More Love Letters, thought Atlanta was her destination. Yet even after she arrived, she found herself in the same old chase for the next best thing…somewhere else. And it left her in a state of anxiety and deep depression. Our hyper-connected era has led us to believe life should be a highlight reel—where what matters most is perfect beauty, instant success, and ready applause. Yet, as Hannah learned, nothing about faith, relationships, or character is instant. So she took up a new mantra: be where your feet are. Give yourself a permission slip to stop chasing the next big thing, and come matter here. Engage the process as much as you trust the God who lovingly leads you. If you are tired of running away from your life or tired of running ragged toward the next thing you think will make you feel complete, Come Matter Here will help you do whatever it takes to show up for the life God has for you. Whether you need to make a brave U-turn, take a bold step forward, or finish the next lap with fresh courage, find fuel and inspiration for the journey right here.

Supposing Him to Be the Gardener

Book Description

This sermon grew out of John 20:15: “Supposing him to be the gardener.” Spurgeon used an extensive well-tended garden as a setting for this discourse, probably Dr. Bennet’s large garden in Mentone, which Spurgeon frequently visited. When Jesus Christ is the gardener of creation it leads to many inferences: it spurs people to their duties, it relieves people from responsibilities they should never assume, it delivers people from fears, it is a warning for the careless, it is a calming influence to those who complain and lastly it is an outlook full of hope. Spurgeon said he is “hoping that I may open many roads of meditation for your hearts . . . to indicate in which direction you may look for a vein of precious ore.” This sermon has been updated to modern language.

The Glory Now Revealed

Book Description

Believers know that when we die we enter heaven and will spend eternity there with God and the saints who have gone before us. But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.
