"Blackboards and Bootstraps: Revisioning education and schooling contributes to an international conversation about public education that, in recent decades, has been attenuated if not silenced by advocates of neoliberalism, marketisation and neocorporatism. Written for a wide audience, this book is not a manifesto for the twenty-first century. It is more of an invitation than a blueprint. In drawing a distinction between education and schooling, it identifies, recovers and explores many ideas about education and schooling that are no less important to the practice of the present than they were to the pedagogues of the past. The introduction questions the role of schooling in the future trajectory of spaceship earth. The remainder of the book considers these questions by revisiting a range of ideas that underpin current practice. It launches itself by returning to the sixteenth century, a time when the organisation and conduct of modern schooling took shape around a new set of terms – syllabus, class, curriculum and didactics – that, in their Latin forms not only became prominent in the international educational lexicon but also survived into the twentieth century. By the First World War, there was an international awareness that schooling is not the same as education. Schooling originally for the land-owning, mercantile and commercial elites of the sixteenth century had only partially engaged with the visions of democratic schooling voiced in the eighteenth century Enlightenment and the subsequent extension of suffrage and national and sexual liberation movements. Impressed by the universalistic achievements of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, the authors raise the prospect of a new educational humanism in the globalised world of the twenty-first century. Bronzeville’s Bootstraps describes the growth of African American businesses in the mid-twentieth century and how successful businesspersons overcame serious obstacles and simultaneously lit lanterns of hope for future generations. This unusual, provocative novel details how Chicago’s black private sector made Bronzeville the most prosperous community in the nation during the turbulent fifties, sixties, and seventies. The protagonist, Jerome Gerard, leaves his Beaumont, Texas, home with his family, seeking employment as a registered pharmacist. After failing in several cities, Jerome stops at the Pershing Hotel to relax for the weekend. The manager, Lester “Turkey” Stevens, introduces Gail and Jerome to Bronzeville’s nightlife. The next day, Lester takes Jerome to Felix and Bea’s restaurant to meet the “swells.” Because of their help-another-brother philosophy, the swells find Jerome a job and a home overnight. After being blatantly lied to by his boss, Jerome schemes to get the cash to buy his first drugstore. He learns what motivates Caucasians and uses their stimuli against them to build a chain. But it wasn’t easy. Jerome encountered racist, economic, and illegal obstacles at every turn.

Harley, named after the iconic motorcycle and the youngest of nineteen children, is dying on the vine of neglect. Anxiety wakes her before dawn each day, and she braces herself with coffee and her first smoke of the day, wading through dirty dishes and serving breakfast to assorted nieces and nephews. With few friends and fewer prospects, Harley drifts toward underachievement and delinquency. Her wayward school attendance and a shoplifting incident lead her high school to identify Harley as ‘at risk,’ and officials sign her into a student mentorship program. Paired with a young, female doctor, the arrangement initially yields little value. Ultimately, however, it develops into a complex net of relationships and a community that neither woman could have imagined. As the women cope with physical abuse, love, death, motherhood, and more, readers are drawn into their lives and the lives of their friends. With help from her community, Harley pulls herself up by her bootstraps, and as she does, she raises those around. Harley’s Bootstraps is a testament to women’s strength and resilience, and it demonstrates the intimacy and power of female relationships. It speaks to the hard-won battles that women need to be proud of and inspires women to care about and to take care of each other.
