Brazilian Government Policy in Agriculture

Book Description

This dissertation analyses the impact of minimun price policy and of fertilizer policy in Brazil upon production of grain and Soybeans. A historical overview of the policies including their legal evolution and the main policy instruments involved is presented in chapter 1. The linkage between minimum price policy and the volume of federal credit conceded to agriculture by the Banco do Brasil is analysed in chapter 2. In chapter 3 several models of supply response to the minimum prices are estimated, using as case studies rice, corn and soybeans. The theoretical consideration relating to the analisys of fertilizer response functions and the empirical analysis for wheat, corn and soybeans using experiment station data are presend in chapter 4, while chapter 5 presents the optimal levels of fertilizer for different scenarios. The comparison of the results obtained in chapter 5 with the "technological package" of EMBRAPA (Brazilian Enterprice for Agricultural Research) is presented in chapter 6 including the main conclusions of the study.

Agriculture and Industry in Brazil

Book Description

Agriculture and Industry in Brazil is a study of the economics of Brazilian agriculture and industry, with a special focus on the importance of innovation to productivity growth. Albert Fishlow and José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho examine technological change in Brazil, highlighting the role of public policy in building institutions and creating an innovation-oriented environment. Fishlow and Vieira Filho tackle the theme of innovation from various angles. They contrast the relationship between state involvement and the private sector in key parts of the Brazilian economy and compare agricultural expansion with growth in the oil and aviation sectors. Fishlow and Vieira Filho argue that modern agriculture is a knowledge-intensive industry and its success in Brazil stems from public institution building. They demonstrate how research has played a key role in productivity growth, showing how prudent innovation policies can leverage knowledge not only within a particular company but also across whole sectors of the economy. The book discusses whether and how Brazil can serve as a model for other middle-income countries eager to achieve higher growth and a more egalitarian distribution of income. An important contribution to comparative, international, and development economics, Agriculture and Industry in Brazil shows how the public success in agriculture became a prototype for advance elsewhere.

Non-Traditional Agriculture and Economic Development

Book Description

Non-Traditional Agriculture and Economic Development identifies the implications of Brazilian economic development of government support for rapid growth of non-traditional agricultural crops such as soybeans. The volume established a framework for the study of these implications via analyses of: objectives of the Brazilian government in the period 1964-1982; agricultural policies and the policy instruments put into place to achieve these objectives; micro and macro impacts upon the relevant sectors of the economy; importance of soybean expansion upon Brazil's foreigh trade. Finally, the author links the Brazilian experience to some of the classical theories of economic development. He concludes that the considerable success in rapid expansion of the soybean crop has not been without drawbacks, in particular: growth at the expense of traditional staple crops and reliance upon imported technologies.
