Travel "diaries" of Bishop George Bell from 1933 to 1939 provide insights into the crisis of German Protestantism in those years. Throughout the middle years of the twentieth century George Bell, bishop of Chichester 1929-57, was deeply involved in the ecumenical movement and the political life of Europe. His sustained commitment to German affairs was demonstrated by his ten visits to Germany, between 1928 and 1957. They are documented in extensive travel "diaries", some of them purely personal and others circulated confidentially to fellow church leaders at the time. Together with other related sources, they provide extraordinary insights into the struggles of the German churches during and after the Third Reich. Equally, they demonstrate the profound difficulties which English Christians faced in coming toterms with a very different Protestant Christianity, and a disturbingly violent political culture. John Stoward Moyes and the Social Gospel

This book deals with the social gospel and one of its leading proponents in twentieth century Australia, the Anglican bishop of Armidale, New South Wales, from 1929 to 1964, John Moyes. It is an investigation and assessment of the career of Bishop Moyes as a study in Christian social engagement. It concerns his vision for the role of the church in society and his contribution to that effect. It is not a biography of John Moyes. Neither is it an exhaustive history of the social gospel movement in Australia or anywhere else, although they both feature prominently throughout. Bishop Moyes was a highly articulate public debater who participated in several of the critical episodes in Australian history during the twentieth century. The reader will find within the pages of this book discussion of highly contentious issues such as the attempt to ban the Communist Party of Australia in 1950 and 1951, the decision to commit Australian troops to the Vietnam War in 1965, and the Christian response to state-legitimised violence. Moyes is placed in context with some of the most notable Christian spokespeople on social and political issues in the twentieth century, such as Walter Rauschenbusch, Ernest Burgmann, William Temple, George Bell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Luther King Jr., and Andr Trocm. It is argued here that John Moyes made intelligent, prescient, and compassionate contributions to many of the issues to which he turned his mind, but that, like most others before or since, he was unable to find a solution to the theological and moral challenges raised by the perceived threat to Australias sovereignty during World War II. This book challenges the view that when national sovereignty is threatened, the Christian response must be to support the governments call to war.




The Church of England and the Holocaust

Explores the Church of England's understanding of the Third Reich and its impact on the reactions to and memory of the Holocaust in Britain. Argues that the Anglican Church did not engage with the Third Reich through the prism of the persecution of the Jews. English Christians commonly perceived Nazism as significant through its anti-Christianity, as an attack on Christian culture, and not through its antisemitism. In the 1930s the Church was opposed to war, but when Nazi antisemitism became much more pronounced after 1938, the Church incorporated this persecution into its image of Nazism as anti-Christian. While there was some concern for Jewish victims (especially on the part of George Bell and William Temple), particular concern was expressed for the German Christian victims of totalitarianism. This led the Anglican Church, after the war, to favor reconstruction of West Germany as a buffer against communism and anti-Christianity. The Church objected to war crimes trials as being opposed to "Christian forgiveness" vs. the "Jewish" value of vengeance, a view which sought to reduce the significance of Nazi antisemitism and the Holocaust.

A Church Divided

This book closely examines the turmoil in the German Protestant churches in the immediate postwar years as they attempted to come to terms with the recent past. Reeling from the impact of war, the churches addressed the consequences of cooperation with the regime and the treatment of Jews. In Germany, the Protestant Church consisted of 28 autonomous regional churches. During the Nazi years, these churches formed into various alliances. One group, the German Christian Church, openly aligned itself with the Nazis. The rest were cautiously opposed to the regime or tried to remain noncommittal. The internal debates, however, involved every group and centered on issues of belief that were important to all. Important theologians such as Karl Barth were instrumental in pressing these issues forward. While not an exhaustive study of Protestantism during the Nazi years, A Church Divided breaks new ground in the discussion of responsibility, guilt, and the Nazi past.

The Anglican Bishop George Bell (of Chichester) and the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Willem A. Visser’t Hooft (of Geneva) exchanged hundreds of letters between 1938 and 1958. The correspondence, reproduced and commented upon here, mirrors the efforts made across the ecumenical movement to unite the Christian churches and also to come to terms with an age of international crisis and conflict. In these first decades of the World Council, it was widely felt that the Church could make a noteworthy contribution to the mitigation of political tensions all over the world.
