"This report is intended as a guide for inspectors who are unfamiliar with the construction procedures used when installing cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete bridge decks. The text has been divided into sections in an effort to simplify the report and make it easier to locate desired information. The first four sections provide some basic background information about cathodic protection. Section V discusses a general system installation; each of the major components are discussed to provide a basic understanding and act as a checklist during the installation process. Section VI discusses the various types of systems that have been installed, to date. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual. Rather, it is to be used as a guide to help overcome some of the most common problems associated with the installation of cathodic protection systems. It is meant to support and supplement good specifications, not replace them"--Page 1

This synthesis will be of interest to research, specifications, materials, design, and construction engineers; contract and specification administrators; agency project managers and staff; and concrete bridge deck construction contractors. This synthesis describes the state of the practice with respect to the development and present status of waterproofing membranes for concrete bridge decks. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the use of waterproofing systems applied to new bridge decks and the rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete bridge decks. In addition, this synthesis describes current practice with regard to methods for assessing the effectiveness of membranes, criteria for use, installation practices, and factors that affect the performance of waterproofing systems in new construction and rehabilitation. Suggestions for future research are also included.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 327: Cost-Effective Practices for Off-System and Local Interest Bridges examines off-system bridge design, construction, maintenance, financing, rehabilitation, and replacement. For this report, 'off-system' refers to those bridges typically owned and maintained by local agencies, and by state agencies on rural and other low-volume roads.

TRB¿s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 608: GASB 34¿Methods for Condition Assessment and Preservation examines methodologies that integrate infrastructure inventory, condition assessments, minimum acceptable condition levels, and funding decisions with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Statement No. 34 reporting requirements. The report also examines the operational and financial impacts of reporting under GASB 34. NCHRP Report 608 updates the findings contained in NCHRP Report 522: A Review of DOT Compliance with GASB 34 Requirements.

" TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R06A-RR-1: Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration identifies nondestructive testing technologies for detecting and characterizing common forms of deterioration in concrete bridge decks. The report also documents the validation of promising technologies, and grades and ranks the technologies based on results of the validations. The main product of this project will be an electronic repository for practitioners, known as the NDToolbox, which will provide information regarding recommended technologies for the detection of a particular deterioration.
