Buddy Plays Soccer

Book Description

Lelu had been practicing her soccer moves with Buddy for a good three years, and they had both become very good players. Lelu always preferred to practice with Buddy because he was fast and forced her to play her best. Her team, Goal Girls, was tied for first place in their division and while Lelu was nervous, she was also excited about maybe winning the championship. She practiced for hours every day, leading up to game day. On game day, as Lelu walked on to the field, she noticed that many of her teammates were not there. Coach Dale said that five of the girls had caught the flu and would not be able to play. That left them with only five players, and if anyone got hurt, they would have to forfeit the game. Not only could they not get hurt, they also could not rotate out to rest. How could they play their hardest and not get hurt or tired at the same time? The girls were going to have a tough time beating the Crushers, but they were up to the challenge. With a tied score, their excitement turned to disappointment as they watched Ariana fall and grab her ankle in pain.

It's a Buddy's World

Book Description

Ever wondered if other parents have the same thoughts? Remember the time your child painted the family dog? Ever wondered how other’s feel about losing a loved one? Well so have I. It’s a Buddy’s World is based on real life events, both personal and the tales of others. Th e book actually started with articles I published in magazines and news papers. My readers commented on wanting more, and some actually thanked me for making them feel better. I have tried to include a broad selection of topics which I hope you will enjoy and, in some cases, take to heart. Curl up and relax, and let me warm your heart and stimulate the “ Hmmm, I wonder...”, side of you. I promise at least some will bring a knowing smile to your face, while others will bring forth feelings of empathy. As that old saying goes : “Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you have been up to”. I hope I can help you smile, at least for a while.

Like Any Normal Day

Book Description

Winner of the 2013 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, Like Any Normal Day is a profound, powerful narrative of a golden boy's tragedy, a woman's unlived life, and a brother's complicated devotion. In the mid-1970s, brothers Buddy and Jimmy Miley were close, both on the verge of impressive athletic careers. A promising high school quarterback, Buddy's potential was cut short by an injury that left him quadriplegic. Immobile and imprisoned in his body for decades, Buddy would watch life pass by from his wheelchair, living at home under his mother's and brother's care, and wondering what his life could have been. Buddy and Jimmy visited special hospitals and traveled to Lourdes in search of a miracle, never losing hope as they searched for a cure. But as Buddy suffered increasing pain, and also realized that he would never be able to walk again—and never prove himself capable of being loved by Karen, a woman he'd first met in high school—he asked Jimmy to help him end his life. Beautifully written, both heart-wrenching and hopeful, Mark Kram Jr.'s Like Any Normal Day explores the important bonds between families and the depths of what we're willing to do for those we love. Like Any Normal Day is the winner of the 2013 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing.

It Isn't Inclusion Without Peers: Supporting Students With and Without Disabilities to Learn Together (The Norton Series on Inclusive Education for Students with Disabilities)

Book Description

Peer-mediated interventions benefit all students in the classroom. Peer-mediated interventions are a category of practices in which students without disabilities provide academic and social support to classmates with disabilities in inclusive classrooms, cafeterias, and on playgrounds. These support strategies are shown to have positive effects on academic, interpersonal, and social development—not only for students with disabilities, but also for their classmates who serve as peer supports. Students with a variety of disabilities benefit from peer-mediated support interventions, including students with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple disabilities. In this book, Matthew Brock provides educators with a practical guide to the implementation of peer-mediated interventions. General and special education teachers will receive expert guidance on how to decide which combination of interventions is likely to work best for each child, and how to collaborate with paraeducators and each other to implement the selected strategies.
