Building Construction and Materials (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Building Construction and Materials The volumes of the International Library of Technology are made up of Instruction Papers, or Sections, comprising the various courses of instruction for students of the International Correspondence Schools. The original manuscripts are pre pared by persons thoroughly qualified both technically and by experience to write with authority, and in many cases they are regularly employed elsewhere in practical work as experts. The manuscripts are then carefully edited to make them suit able for correspondence instruction. The Instruction Papers are written clearly and in the simplest language possible, so as to make them readily understood by all students. Necessary technical expressions are clearly explained when introduced. The great majority of our students wish to prepare them selves for advancement in their vocations or to qualify for more congenial occupations. Usually they are employed and able to devote only a few hours a day to study. Therefore every effort must be made to give them practical and accurate information in clear and concise form and to make this infor mation include all of the essentials but none of the non essentials. To make the text clear, illustrations are used freely. These illustrations are especially made by our own Illustrating Department in order to adapt them fully to the requirements of the text. In the table of contents that immediately follows are given the titles of the Sections included in this volume, and under each title are listed the main topics discussed. Building Materials

Book Description

Excerpt from Building Materials: Being an Introduction to the Study of the Principal Materials Used in Building Construction This book is intended to be an introduction to the study of Building Materials for the instruction of the young builder and architect. Only the principal materials are dealt with, special stress being laid on the exact examination of the materials for their constructional strength under different conditions, and their composition as revealed by chemical analysis, and by the microscope. The author realises that some, at any rate, of his readers may be unacquainted with the elements of chemistry. He has, therefore, tried to make the essential chemical information as simple as possible at the risk of some repetition. The student is advised to regard this book as merely introductory, and pursue his studies further by reading, more especially, Howe's Geology of Building Stones; The Materials of Construction, by Johnson; The Chemistry and Testing of Cements, by Desch; Concrete, Plain and Reinforced, by Taylor and Thompson; Modern Brickmaking, by Searle The Mechanical Properties of Wood, by Record; House Painting and Decoration, by Jennings; and Modern Asphalt Pavements, by Richardson. The author wishes at this point to express his deep indebtedness to these text-books in particular, as well as to others, for the information contained in the following pages. In addition, various text-books, the publications of the Engineering and Architectural Societies, both here and in America and the Reports of the Washington Bureau for the investigation of Building Materials have been consulted. Students interested in the resistance to fire of various materials should consult the Reports of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The author wishes especially to thank Professor Desch, Mr Searle, Mr Howe, Mr Borthwick, Mr Jennings, and Mr Vaughan for having kindly looked through the chapters in which they are Specially interested, and made many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Details of Building Construction (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Details of Building Construction In the matter of nomenclature care has been taken to use only such terms as are sanctioned by the authority of the best writers on architecture and building, and to use them accurately, not in the hope of bringing order out of the chaos of architectural terminology, but only in the hope of escaping the accusation of having worse confounded the present deplorable confusion. The Mechanics of Building Construction (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Mechanics of Building Construction During the summer of 1906 the author was requested by the Board of Education to give a course of lectures at South Kensington upon The Mechanics of Building Construction to a number of Science teachers selected by the Department from all parts of the Kingdom, with the object of perfecting their knowledge of the subject and at the same time illustrating the manner in which it should be taught. The course was so well appreciated by the teachers that a. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Building-Construction and Superintendence, Vol. 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Building-Construction and Superintendence, Vol. 2: Ninth Edition, Revised; Carpenters' Work The illustrations may not be considered as models of draughtsmanship, but on a small scale are such as are usually required in making working draw ings and in explaining the method of construction to be pursued. It is hoped that their value may be in proportion to the labor and thought that have been expended upon them. The various materials employed by the carpenter, or with which he usually has to do, have also been carefully considered, with the view of enabling the architect and builder to employ them wisely, and to distinguish between the various kinds and qualities. An especial effort has been made, in describing different forms of con struction, not to follow entirely the methods of one section of the country, but rather to give the different methods pursued by different architects and in different localities, contrast them, and bring out their relative advantages. In this the author has been greatly assisted by many prominent architects, and by his own experience in both the Eastern and Western portions of the country. The method of paragraphing the subjects followed in Part I has been retained, partly for convenience in making cross references and also for greater convenience in the class room. Much pains have been taken to make the Index as complete as possible, using the most suggestive terms, so that any subject may readily be found. Materials and Construction

Book Description

Excerpt from Materials and Construction: A Text-Book of Elementary Structural Design The formulas given for solution of problems coming under reinforced concrete are taken for the most part from Concretel by Edward Godfrey, M. Am. Soc. C. E. These formulas were first presented by Mr. Godfrey in Engineering News, being quite thoroughly discussed, both favorably and otherwise, all of which discussion appears in the book mentioned. The formulas are notable for their simplicity; at the same time they point onto a definite result to be obtained which is an important factor for the beginner. The author has compared the formulas presented, with others of much more complicated arrangement and the differ ence in results is comparatively small. In dealing with this material we must keep in mind the fact that work is being done in an element which does not lend itself to refined calculations, and for which we have at best only very unsatisfactory formulas, if results obtained by their use are expected to check up with experiment. Paper No. 12502 by Gaetano Lanza, M. Am. Soc. M. E., is interesting and should be carefully read by teachers handling this subject with classes. Throughout the work the principles should be brought out by the teacher, in the solution of problems before the class.
