The Cairn Terrier: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide To: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and

Book Description

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terrier and originates from the Scottish Highlands. The Cairn Terrier is one of Scotland's earliest recorded breeds of working dog. The breed's name is derived from its working purpose: to hunt and chase rodents found between the cairns located in the Scottish Highlands. Unusually the breed tends to be left-pawed, which is a trait that commonly correlates to a superior sense of smell and performance in scent related tasks and hunting. The Cairn Terrier has an abundant, coarse and shaggy outer coat and a dramatically softer undercoat. Despite having a dense and relatively long coat, the Cairn Terrier tends to shed very little. The breed's coat comes in five common colorations which are: black, cream, brindle, deep red and light gray. Despite being a relatively small breed, the Cairn Terrier is a highly playful and energetic dog! It is important to make sure that you properly exercise your Cairn Terrier as, due to its working history, it is likely to develop destructive behaviors if it is bored or has an abundance of energy. As a whole the Cairn Terrier is a known to be an extremely friendly, affectionate and playful breed who generally enjoys meeting new people. It is important to remember that Cairn Terriers are terrier: which means that they are independent, tough, alert and have a high prey drive which may lead to it chasing other small household pets. If you own a Cairn Terrier it is important to train and socialize it thoroughly to minimize the chances of it developing any antisocial behaviors. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Cairn Terrier's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Cairn Terrier, raising your Cairn Terrier from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! Cairn Terrier

Book Description

The active and industrious Cairn Terrier is a charming and sweet companion dog, whose legendary appearance in the Wizard of Oz solidified the breed’s celebrity for generations. Breeders today continue to refer to the breed as the ‘Toto dog.’ As a companion to children, a family watchdog, an accomplished show dog and competition dog, and a ‘verminator’ around the home, this terrier breed fits into most homes and living situations. The breed is as useful as it is endearing. The Cairn Terrier developed in Scotland alongside his fellow Scotts dogs, the West Highland White Terrier, Scottish Terrier, and Skye Terrier. Author Robert Jamieson retells the origins of the breed and spells out the many characteristics that recommend the Cairn Terrier as an ideal pet for the right family seeking a bright, easy-care companion dog. New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author’s advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of Cairn Terriers

Book Description

This book (Cairn Terriers) provides you with a thorough description and positive attributes of cairn terrier including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors, and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known, predisposed, hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed, with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small heads, deep chests, narrow waists, and large leg muscles. On the other hand, dachshunds take their name from German words meaning “badger dog,” and they use their long noses, long bodies, and short legs to both track, enter, and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various veterinary medical texts and journals on topics such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the Kennel Club of England reports over four hundred known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than fifty hereditary issues are able to be predicted or diagnosed. Sequencing the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing (including blood tests and urine testing), plus phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye-registry exams by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists have advanced the science of breed-related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners, and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Cairn Terrier

Book Description

Cairn terriers are small—but their fun personalities can easily fill up the big screen! Right off the bat, readers will meet Terry, the little cairn terrier who played Toto in the 1939 classic movie The Wizard of Oz. Toto became one of Hollywood’s most famous dogs because of the loyalty, courage, and intelligence that Terry showed on screen—traits that any cairn terrier owner would instantly recognize. Where did these qualities come from? Perhaps they can be traced back to the cairn terrier’s ancestors, who worked on farms in the Highlands of Scotland hundreds of years ago. These working dogs were bred for loyalty, intelligence, and bravery so they could help farmers hunt down farm pests like rats and weasels. A narrative treat for dog lovers, Cairn Terrier: Hero of Oz covers the breed’s history and its relationship to the animal’s current size, physical and mental characteristics, and suitability as a pet.

West Highland White Terrier

The world’s most popular terrier, the West Highland White Terrier is famous for his snow-white coat and his delightful personality. This Comprehensive Owner’s Guide begins with a history of the terriers from the Land of Scots, retelling how breed type developed and how this one-of-a-kind all-white dog rose to favor. Confirming the breed’s large international following, the chapter traces the breed’s exportation to the United States, Canada, Australia, and beyond. The characteristic chapter describes the Westie’s personality, physical traits, and special requirements, providing excellent evidence that this “cute, apartment-sized, filled with personality-plus and very active” purebred dog happily fits into every home that welcomes him with open, loving arms.
