Canaletto: Life and work

Book Description

The first edition, (1962), described as an "almost miraculous accomplishment" by the Times Literary Supplement, presented over 1000 paintings by or attributed to Canaletto, as well as his drawings and etchings. The second edition (1976), out of print since 1985, is now revised by J.G. Links to include references to all that had been published on Canaletto since 1962, in addition to over 100 added paintings and drawings, and a revision of the etchings chapter. This two-volume set provides completely revised catalogue entries, a new nine-page section of illustrations that reproduces all newly discovered works and a number not previously illustrated, a reprint of Constable's masterly biography of Canaletto with necessary ammendments, a supplementary index with additions and amendments to the catalogue raisonné, and Links's Review of Canaletto's work from 1976-88.

Book Description

Canaletto began his career as a theatrical scene painter, like his father, in the Baroque tradition. Influenced by Giovanni Panini, he is specialised in vedute (views) of Venice, his birth place. Strong contrast between light and shadow is typical of this artist. Furthermore, if some of those views are purely topographical, others include festivals or ceremonial subjects. He also published, thanks to John Smith, his agent, a series of etchings of Cappricci. His main purchasers were British aristocracy because his views reminded them of their Grand Tour. In his paintings geometrical perspective and colours are structuring. Canaletto spent ten years in England. John Smith sold Canaletto’s works to George III, creating the major part of the Royal Canaletto Collection. His greatest works influenced landscape painting in the nineteenth century.
