A great navigator and cartographer, Captain Matthew Flinders is a prominent figure in Australian history as he was the first to circumnavigate the continent and identify it as such. He is also credited with identifying Tasmania as an island, finding the Bass Strait and mapping the coastline of Australia (then New Holland), including the all-important Port Phillip, present-day Melbourne.
