Captains of Leadership

Book Description

Another two-hour brainstorm with your team, and you are left feeling drained: nothing really useful came out of it. It feels like a waste of time. Why is it that so many meetings are not effective? We need to start working with a type of leadership that empowers from the bottom up instead of top-down: facilitation. In Captains of Leadership you will learn the secrets of facilitative leadership, which will allow you to bring co-creation to another level. No more wasting time during team meetings, learn how to make every shared moment count. Alwin Put outlines a three-part approach in which he explains how to get the best and most out of people by working together. This book is your guide to become a facilitative leader, in other words: a Captain of Leadership. The three parts discuss (1) why it is worth the effort to develop yourself as a facilitator, (2) how to learn to work with the holy trinity of facilitation (guide, conduct and catalyse), and (3) how to keep the right frame of mind and a high energy level to get the most out of your crew. Captains of Leadership combines elements of business, creativity and self-awareness. It is an essential tool for anyone who believes in co-creation. It is both hands-on and inspiring. Become a Captain of Leadership: with facilitation, anyone can step up and be a leader.

Whaling Captains of Color

Book Description

The history of whaling as an industry on this continent has been well-told in books, including some that have been bestsellers, but what hasn’t been told is the story of whaling’s leaders of color in an era when the only other option was slavery. Whaling was one of the first American industries to exhibit diversity. A man became a captain not because he was white or well connected, but because he knew how to kill a whale. Along the way, he could learn navigation and reading and writing. Whaling presented a tantalizing alternative to mainland life. Working with archival records at whaling museums, in libraries, from private archives and interviews with people whose ancestors were whaling masters, Finley culls stories from the lives of over 50 black whaling captains to create a portrait of what life was like for these leaders of color on the high seas. Each time a ship spotted a whale, a group often including the captain would jump into a small boat, row to the whale, and attack it, at times with the captain delivering the killing blow. The first, second, or third mate and boat steerer could eventually have opportunities to move into increasingly responsible roles. Finley explains how this skills-based system propelled captains of color to the helm. The book concludes as facts and factions conspire to kill the industry, including wars, weather, bad management, poor judgment, disease, obsolescence, and a non-renewable natural resource. Ironically, the end of the Civil War allowed the African Americans who were captains to exit the difficult and dangerous occupation—and make room for the Cape Verdean who picked up the mantle, literally to the end of the industry.

Those Forgotten People

Book Description

Year 2013! He was educated and was a believer in everything that had a scientifically proven explanation. Sudhir, after constant failures on his part which led to an unwanted divorce, was thrust by a strange twist of faith on an isolated island. He gained unfathomable power, which had no scientific explanation. He was not a politician, and yet, he was forced to pit his mind against a globally powerful nation, and that nation was guided by a man whose magical powers far exceeded that of his own. His school curriculum never taught him to fight with a sword, nor travel time. Yet, here he was, travelling back in time to unravel a mystery that harassed a royal family. Here he was again, somehow managing to ward off ruthless, bloodthirsty, sword-wielding pirates with his own clumsily held sword! To protect himself from dying? Obviously, yes! But, also to protect the fabulous wealth of gold, silver, rubies, diamonds and so much more that were lost in the seven ships around the year 1782.
