Low Reynolds Number Aerodynamics

Book Description

Current interest in a variety of low Reynolds number applications has focused attention on the design and evaluation of efficient airfoil sections at chord Reynolds numbers from about 100,000 to about 1,000,000. These applications include remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) at high altitudes, sailplanes, ultra-light man-carrying/man powered aircraft, mini-RPVs at low altitudes and wind turbines/propellers. The purpose of this conference was to bring together those researchers who have been active in areas closely related to this subject. All of the papers presented are research type papers. Main topics are: Airfoil Design and Analysis, Computational Studies, Stability and Transition, Laminar Separation Bubble, Steady and Unsteady Wind Tunnel Experiments and Flight Experiments.

Captive Aircraft Testing at High Angles of Attack

Book Description

A captive testing technique capable of simulating aircraft maneuvers at high angles of attack has been developed and tested in the Aerodynamic Tunnel 16T of the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). The captive technique uses a closed loop system between wind tunnel, model, and computer. Use of the wind tunnel as an analog forcing function eliminates the requirement for a conventional static data matrix in motion simulation. Various high angle-of-attack maneuvers (rudder roll, aileron roll, wind-up turn, etc.) were generated with the captive system and show good correlation with flight data. (Author).

Determination of Captive Flight Loads and Separation Trajectories of Airborne Stores

Book Description

A summary of the state-of-the-art in determining captive flight loads and separation trajectories of airborne stores is presented. The summary is based largely on a recent survey of appropriate aerospace concerns and government installations. Responses to the survey indicate that the present state-of-the-art does not allow an accurate general analytical solution to the problem except under the most idealized situations. Testing of the specific aircraft/store combination is therefore recommended unless the combination closely matches a previously tested combination for which data are available. (Author).
