My Buddy Bali

Book Description

A seven-and-a-half months old Corgi named Bali ran away from his residence in Toronto, Canada, searching for freedom and adventures. He fell into the hands of two young pickpockets whose plan was to steal small valuables in Toronto and resell them in the City of New York. After crossing the border into Buffalo, New York, on the bullet train from Toronto to New York City, a snow blizzard hits, and they get trapped. The rescue services took the passengers to refuges in nearby motels, and then Bali accidentally broke loose. In his run-off, he stumbled into the house of genius scientists. Unbeknownst to him, their experimental device teleported him to the closest parallel dimension, the melodramatic soap opera that the girlfriend of the scientist's son was watching on television. It was a re-run of the award-winning South Korean soap opera: "Kisses and Tears."

Capturing Light

Book Description

In almost all photography it’s the quality of light that makes or breaks the shot. For professional photographers, chasing the light, waiting for it, sometimes helping it, and finally capturing it is a constant preoccupation — and for some an obsession. Drawing on four decades of doing just this, Michael Freeman takes a simple but practical approach to reacting to, and capturing photography’s most important commodity. There are just three sections titled Waiting, Chasing, and Helping: Waiting explains the kinds of lighting that photographers can anticipate and plan for, while Chasing explores the transient, serendipitous light that photographers have to work quickly to exploit. Helping, the final and most technical section, focuses on the skills and techniques for enhancing, reducing, or otherwise controlling light, covering everything from in-the-field shooting choices to technical transformations to post-production.

Making It Up Together

Book Description

Most studies of musical improvisation focus on individual musicians. But that is not the whole story. From jazz to flamenco, Shona mbira to Javanese gamelan, improvised practices thrive on group creativity, relying on the close interaction of multiple simultaneously improvising performers. In Making It Up Together, Leslie A. Tilley explores the practice of collective musical improvisation cross-culturally, making a case for placing collectivity at the center of improvisation discourse and advocating ethnographically informed music analysis as a powerful tool for investigating improvisational processes. Through two contrasting Balinese case studies—of the reyong gong chime’s melodic norot practice and the interlocking drumming tradition kendang arja—Tilley proposes and tests analytical frameworks for examining collectively improvised performance. At the micro-level, Tilley’s analyses offer insight into the note-by-note decisions of improvising performers; at the macro-level, they illuminate larger musical, discursive, structural, and cultural factors shaping those decisions. This multi-tiered inquiry reveals that unpacking how performers play and imagine as a collective is crucial to understanding improvisation and demonstrates how music analysis can elucidate these complex musical and interactional relationships. Highlighting connections with diverse genres from various music cultures, Tilley’s examinations of collective improvisation also suggest rich potential for cross-genre exploration. The surrounding discussions point to larger theories of communication and interaction, creativity and cognition that will be of interest to a range of readers—from ethnomusicologists and music theorists to cognitive psychologists, jazz studies scholars, and improvising performers. Setting new parameters for the study of improvisation, Making It Up Together opens up fresh possibilities for understanding the creative process, in music and beyond.

New Wars

Book Description

Al Qaeda's deadly assaults against the American homeland on September 11, 2001 deeply altered regional security architectures the world over. Religious extremists responsible for having coordinated and implemented the 9/11 attacks have brought state and non-state actors to radically reconsider traditional concepts of security, including responses and the need for tactical and strategic preemption in the face of growing conventional and asymmetric threats to communities at home and abroad. Drawing upon critical new research, the analyses presented by the contributors of this volume challenge and even shatter previously held ideas about domestic and international terrorism and state-sanctioned violence. They shed light upon new conceptions of security as well as the need for actors to address existing and emerging cultures of fear and critical susceptibilities in the face of wanton violence and security of the state in the 21st century.
