To Carla, they are delicious and creative lunches, but her teasing classmates are unconvinced and abandon her at the lunch table to eat her bizarre sandwiches alone. One day, however, tables turn when Buster—the worst tease of all—forgets his lunch on the day of the picnic and Carla thoughtfully offers him her extra sandwich. Her own spirited nature helps Carla teach her classmates that "unusual" can actually be good. Lively illustrations help showcase the book's messages of acceptance, tolerance, individuality, and creativity, and the funny plot and authentic dialogue are sure to make this tale a favorite among elementary school children. Death of the Phoenix

Book Description

DEATH OF THE PHOENIX is the first volume of the trilogy SPIRIT OF THE SHARK. The story takes place in the East Indies during and after the Japanese occupation of the islands. It tells the story of Kees, a five-year old boys journey through the brutal world of Japanese operated prisons and his final escape into a new and civilized world. This new world proves to be more hurtful than the life he has just left behind. Not wanting to live with people any longer and having heard about the dangers of the sea, he dreams of meeting the tiger shark at the far horizon. With the help of an old fisherman they repairs a derelict canoe. Out at sea he meets the shark and discovers that he is not his enemy and later becomes his friend and savior. During the early weeks of the occupation, Beth, Kees mother, fends off the advances of a Japanese Kenpeitai officer and in the process nearly kills him. She and two small children have to flee for their lives struggling their way through mountain canyons and snake-ridden swamps. The story displays a delicate balance between humor and horror, compassion and evil, courage and fear. It highlights peoples extraordinary potential when confronted with nearly insurmountable obstacles and their willingness to risk their lives not only for their friends but also their enemies. An old servant woman, Nanektua, teaches him to see the world not only from his own perspective, but also to except the views of different cultures and religions. The SPIRIT OF THE SHARK is a multi cultural adventure story that touches on subjects such as terrorism, perceived ownership and other issues which are as pertinent today as they were then. This trilogy covers a part of history that has been adamantly denied by the Japanese and conveniently forgotten by the Allies.

Your Movie Sucks

Book Description

A collection of some of the Pulitzer Prize–winning film critic’s most scathing reviews, from Alex & Emma to the remake of Yours, Mine, and Ours. From Roger’s review of Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (0 stars): “The movie created a spot of controversy in February 2005. According to a story by Larry Carroll of MTV News, Rob Schneider took offense when Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times listed this year's Best Picture nominees and wrote that they were 'ignored, unloved, and turned down flat by most of the same studios that . . . bankroll hundreds of sequels, including a follow-up to Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, a film that was sadly overlooked at Oscar time because apparently nobody had the foresight to invent a category for Best Running Penis Joke Delivered by a Third-Rate Comic.' Schneider retaliated by attacking Goldstein in full-page ads in Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. In an open letter to Goldstein, Schneider wrote: “Well, Mr. Goldstein, I decided to do some research to find out what awards you have won. I went online and found that you have won nothing. Absolutely nothing. No journalistic awards of any kind . . . . Maybe you didn’t win a Pulitzer Prize because they haven’t invented a category for Best Third-Rate, Unfunny Pompous Reporter Who’s Never Been Acknowledged by His Peers . . . .” Schneider was nominated for a 2000 Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actor but lost to Jar-Jar Binks. But Schneider is correct, and Patrick Goldstein has not yet won a Pulitzer Prize. Therefore, Goldstein is not qualified to complain that Columbia financed Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo while passing on the opportunity to participate in Million Dollar Baby, Ray, The Aviator, Sideways, and Finding Neverland. As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks.” Roger Ebert’s I Hated Hated Hated This Movie, which gathered some of his most scathing reviews, was a bestseller. This collection continues the tradition, reviewing not only movies that were at the bottom of the barrel, but also movies that he found underneath the barrel.
