Book Description

This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's "Author's Confession", an article dating to around June of 1847. This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. Set in the backdrop of a small provincial town, this comedic short story by Gogol chronicles the adventures of Chertokutsky, an army officer, as he tries to procure a carriage to attend a ball. Through a series of humorous mishaps and interactions, Gogol presents a satirical commentary on Russian bureaucracy, societal prestige, and human folly.
