Catalogue of an Exhibition

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition: Of American Paintings Furniture, Silver and Other Objects of Art, MDCXXV-MDCCCXXV The American section of the Hudson-Fulton Exhibition embraces examples of the industrial arts dating from the earliest Colonial times in New England and New Amsterdam to about the time of Fulton's death, namely, 1815, and paintings by American artists born before 1800. In the collecting of these objects, the aim has been to show by means of noteworthy examples the development of artistic expression in the more important handicrafts - furniture, silverware, and pottery. Being the first time such an exhibition has been made, it is hoped that through it a new emphasis may be given to the importance of our early workmen. The Committee desires to express its thanks to all those who have generously lent the objects which form the collections here catalogued. It desires especially to express its obligation to Mr. H. Eugene Bolles for his generous action in lending examples of Seventeenth-Century furniture from his collection, without which it would have been impossible to illustrate that period adequately.
