Cedar Rapids is the only city in America to house its government offices on an island. But tons of other iconic structures that defined the city are no longer around. The Little Gallery on First Avenue was created to showcase local artists. Yager's "moved up to bring prices down." The area was home to thirty-nine theaters, including two from 1928 that are still in operation. From the hotels to the factories, the ethnic districts to the depots, the dance halls to the amusement parks, these are the places that made a difference in the City of Five Seasons. Local author Pete Looney traces the history of the structures.

According to Glenda Riley, “the historical conflict between anti-divorce and pro-divorce factions has prevented the development of effective, beneficial divorce laws, procedures, and policies. Today we still lack processes that move spouses out of unworkable marriages in a constructive fashion and get them back into the mainstream of life in a stable, productive condition.” Her pioneering historical overview offers proposals for dealing with a subject that now pertains to nearly half of all marriages.

Spur Award-Winning Author ED GORMAN TROUBLE IN STORE Cedar Rapids in 1884 was a place where Les Graves had a chance to finally earn the respectability he always wanted and to marry the woman he loved. Then his brother T.Z. came into town, bringing with him trouble with a capital T. It seemed that T.Z. and his friend Neely had big plans for the local bank where Graves happened to work. And they were counting on Graves' help to pull off the heist. All Graves got in return for his loyalty was a hard cot in a drafty cell—until a rivalry between two local sheriffs gave him one shot at freedom. But—before Graves could return to his peaceful life, and the pursuit of the woman of his dreams, there were a few more twists in the trail…with trouble around each bend. In Teaching in Long Underwear: My China, Ernie Danek shares his experiences of living as a foreigner outside of the major cities in China. As an American entering his early years as a senior citizen, he faced the challenges of teaching for a decade in the Middle Kingdom's public university system. During his time there, he developed an oral English teaching plan for freshman English majors. Ernie observed in his day-to-day experiences the numerous differences between Chinese and American cultures. Many stories were told to him by his students of the grotesque follies that resulted from Chairman Mao’s efforts to expel Western and traditional Chinese influences from China during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Ernie’s students insisted on hearing his American viewpoint of China’s successful launch of a manned, orbital spacecraft. His comment, “It's like watching your little brother learn to walk,” produced both titters and scowls. Teaching in Long Underwear: My China provides an honest account of what it is like to teach outside of the major Chinese cities and what it means to live as a foreigner inside an ancient culture.
