Banking sector plays a vital role in the economic development of a country. It is also an integral part of the financial system of a modern industrial economy. Modern banking in India could be traced back to the establishment of Bank of Bengal on January 2, 1809, the first joint-stock bank sponsored by Government of Bengal. In 1921 the three presidency banks were merged to form the Imperial Bank of India, with the establishment of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1935, the central banking responsibilities that the Imperial Bank of India was carrying on came to an end. Banking sector reforms in India are aimed at induction of best international practices and technological changes for competing globally. Today, twenty years after the economic liberalization which began in 1991, we have a vibrant banking sector, powered by both improved- efficiency public sector banks and growth-hungry private ones.
