The arson rate in Australia has climbed significantly over the past 30 years ... This paper explores the possible motives for arson, with special attention given to psychological disorders that may be associated with fire-starting. Also investigated are methods to tackle the problem of arson, including public awareness campaigns and fire safety education for young people ... The current shortage of scientific research on arsonists is a significant obstacle to reducing the problem of arson in Australia.

The study assessed the psychometric properties of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) questionnaires (Family Fire Risk Interview Form, Juvenile Fire Risk Interview Form, Parent Fire Risk Interview Form) used to record juvenile firesetting events. It also attempted to identify characteristics of firesetters, determine a basis for the variation in the severity of fires set, and determine the chance of recidivism. Specific types of firesetters exhibit a range of different characteristics. Maturational and environmental factors are implicated. Recommends that future examinations of this subject should include an examination of the firesetter's history, including cognitive and behavioural reviews, and parent and family influences and stressors.

A provocative rethinking of how humans and fire have evolved together over time—and our responsibility to reorient this relationship before it's too late. The Pyrocene tells the story of what happened when a fire-wielding species, humanity, met an especially fire-receptive time in Earth's history. Since terrestrial life first appeared, flames have flourished. Over the past two million years, however, one genus gained the ability to manipulate fire, swiftly remaking both itself and eventually the world. We developed small guts and big heads by cooking food; we climbed the food chain by cooking landscapes; and now we have become a geologic force by cooking the planet. Some fire uses have been direct: fire applied to convert living landscapes into hunting grounds, forage fields, farms, and pastures. Others have been indirect, through pyrotechnologies that expanded humanity's reach beyond flame's grasp. Still, preindustrial and Indigenous societies largely operated within broad ecological constraints that determined how, and when, living landscapes could be burned. These ancient relationships between humans and fire broke down when people began to burn fossil biomass—lithic landscapes—and humanity's firepower became unbounded. Fire-catalyzed climate change globalized the impacts into a new geologic epoch. The Pleistocene yielded to the Pyrocene. Around fires, across millennia, we have told stories that explained the world and negotiated our place within it. The Pyrocene continues that tradition, describing how we have remade the Earth and how we might recover our responsibilities as keepers of the planetary flame.

Its previous edition hailed as "the best reference for the majority of practicing psychiatrists" (Doody's Book Reviews) and a book that "more than any other, provides an approach to how to think about psychiatry that integrates both the biological and psychological" (JAMA), The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry has been meticulously revised to maintain this preeminence as an accessible and authoritative educational reference and clinical compendium. It combines the strengths of its three editors -- Robert Hales in clinical and community psychiatry, Stuart Yudofsky in neuropsychiatry, and new co-editor Glen Gabbard in psychotherapy -- in recruiting outstanding authors to summarize the latest developments in psychiatry and features 101 contributors, 65 of whom are new to this edition. The book boasts a new interior design, with more figures and color throughout to aid comprehension. Each chapter ends with 5-10 key points, 5-10 recommended readings, and helpful Web sites not only for the clinician but also for patients and family members. The book also includes complimentary access to the full text online. Online benefits include powerful searching, electronic bookmarking, and access by username and password from wherever you have Web access -- especially convenient for times when the print copy of your textbook is not where you are. The online version is accompanied by a downloadable PowerPoint presentation, which contains a wealth of material to enhance classroom presentation, study, and clinical use. Among the improvements to this edition's content: • Of the text's 44 chapters, 23 either feature new topics or have new authors, making this the most completely revised edition yet.• New basic-science chapters on cellular and molecular biology of the neuron and on neuroanatomy for the psychiatrist conveniently distill essential information on the biological foundations of psychiatric disorders for clinicians.• A new chapter on human sexuality and sexual dysfunctions, and another new chapter on treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender patients, equips clinicians to address the entire spectrum of sexual issues and their attendant mental health concerns.• New chapters on nonpharmacological somatic treatments, supportive psychotherapy, and combination psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy augment the section on psychiatric treatments.• A new chapter on the assessment of dangerousness -- an individual's propensity to commit violent acts -- presents helpful guidelines for appropriately evaluating and minimizing the risk of violence in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Why The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry will be your first choice among comprehensive psychiatry textbooks: • Complimentary Access to the Full Text Online -- Online benefits include powerful searching, electronic bookmarking, and download to PDA.• PowerPoint Presentation -- Online version is accompanied by a downloadable PowerPoint presentation, which contains a wealth of material to help you enhance classroom presentation, study, and in clinical use. • Self-Assessment -- An interactive online Self-Assessment allows you to assess your knowledge of each chapter, with links back to the textbook when more study is needed.• Summary Points -- Each chapter ends with 5-10 key points, 5-10 recommended readings, and helpful web sites not only for the clinician but also for referral to patients and family members. • Co-Editor Glen O. Gabbard, M.D. -- As the third Co-Editor, Dr. Gabbard adds depth and perspective to psychotherapeutic approaches.• Chapter Authors -- Partnership of senior and junior faculty brings fresh insights tempered by wisdom and experience.• Peer-Reviewed -- Rigorously peer reviewed and updated to reflect the rapidly changing profession. • Disclosure of Interest Statements -- Disclosure from each chapter author assures you that potential biases have been removed.• Comprehensive But Concise -- Inclusion of essential information eases information overload.• Better Layout -- Larger type for text makes book easier to read and color figures are provided throughout the text. ADULT DELIBERATE FIRESETTING Explore the theoretical foundations of—and discover effective treatment options for—adults who deliberately set fires In Adult Deliberate Firesetting: Theory, Assessment, and Treatment, a team of distinguished researchers deliver a comprehensive exploration of individuals who intentionally set fires. The book covers major theories on the motivations and processes involved in firesetting, as well as the assessment and treatment of patients and clients who demonstrate this behaviour. The treatment portion of the book focuses on a strengths-based rehabilitative approach that rests on the assumption that criminogenic and human needs are inextricably intertwined. Readers will find common challenges faced by practitioners in recruiting and facilitating group-based treatment for people who have set fires. Readers will also benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to deliberate firesetting, including its definitions, terms, and labels Comprehensive explorations of the key characteristics and clinical features of people who deliberately set fires Practical discussions of theories of deliberate firesetting, including effective psychological theory and typological explanations of firesettings In-depth examinations of best practice risk assessments in defendants, and patients who deliberately set fires Perfect for psychology researchers and practitioners, Adult Deliberate Firesetting: Theory, Assessment, and Treatment will also earn a place in the libraries of psychiatrists, forensic psychologists, social workers, and others involved in the assessment and treatment of adults.
