The charming and poignant story of the relationship between a philosophy professor and his pet wolf. Mark Rowlands was a young philosophy professor, rootless and searching for life’s greater meaning. Shortly after arriving at the University of Alabama, he noticed a classified ad in the local paper advertising wolf cubs for sale and decided he had to investigate, if only out of curiosity. It was love at first sight, and the bond that grew between philosopher and wolf reaffirms for us the incredible relationships that exist between man and animal. Mark welcomed his new companion, Brenin, into his home. More than just an exotic pet, Brenin exerted an immense influence on Rowlands both as a person, and, strangely enough, as a philosopher, leading him to reevaluate his attitude toward love, happiness, nature, death, and the true meaning of companionship.

In the twenty-first century, Christian individuals and institutions routinely face ethical choices not imagined fifty years ago, with little ethical mooring in the surrounding culture to guide us. Thus, Christian ethics is an important field of study for the student, pastor, or concerned layperson. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most complicated of all the Christian academic disciplines, entailing numerous approaches and having roots in both philosophy and theology. Charts of Christian Ethics provides a wealth of valuable information, laid out in an accessible visual format, to help the student of ethics navigate and comprehend this complex field of study. It provides an outline for Christian ethics, explaining some of the major ideas and approaches. It is divided into five major sections: * Philosophical Foundations of Ethics (including logic, metaphysics, and epistemology) * Approaches to Ethics (metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics) * Biblical Foundations of Christian Ethics (hermeneutics, ethics in the Old Testament, and ethics in the New Testament) * Theological Foundations of Christian Ethics (including God, creation, man, and the church) * History of Ethics (including the premodern, modern, and postmodern eras) Containing more than 100 charts, this volume is a useful tool for classroom use, individual study, and as a handy reference.

The study of being was one of the main preoccupations of Etienne Gilson's scholarly and intellectual life. Being and Some Philosophers is at once a testament to the persistence of those concerns and an important landmark in the history of the question of being. The book charts the ways in which being is translated across history, from unity in Plato and substance in Aristotle to essence in Avicenna and the act of existence in Aquinas. It examines the vicissitudes of essence and existence in Suarez and Christian Wolff, in Hegel and Kierkegaard, in order to uncover the metaphysical and existential foundations of modern thought. And yet Being and Some Philosophers remains not so much an historical investigation (although it could only have been written by a scholar steeped in the history of philosophy) but, in the words of its author, "a philosophical book, and a dogmatically philosophical one at that." Its passionate vigour has proven, over many years, at once fresh and provocative. Indeed, the appendix to this revised edition contains critiques of the book by two Thomists as well as Gilson's replies to their objections.
