Excerpt from A Childhood I do not know the author of this book, and I have, as a rule, a strong feeling against books that tell no continuous story. Yet it has interested me greatly, both because of the skill and faithfulness with which the scattered memories are recorded, and because it somehow reads like the proem to something sterner and sadder. Memories of childhood draw most of their magic from some incompleteness of this sort. They seem like the random play of eddies in a wide river that will hereafter gather to a cataract, significant because greater things are coming, and pathetic because they give no sign what those greater things will be. The randomness of childhood is well represented here; also its sense of a mysterious life in lifeless things, its terrors and its heartlessness; and the eternal mockery of the poor "grown-ups" in the background, vexing their hearts with love and care for the children, and succeeding only in becoming a well-recognized nuisance, useful as a protection against still greater calamities, though always checking and marring the current of true life. Excerpt from Childhood SQ Distance seemed to set these gallant little creatures free from some of the disadvantages of the world and from the uneasiness of crowds. They were released in a world barely sprinkled with people within hail of one another, glad of recognition, and made friends by intervening space, and liberty partaken. This survey covers virtually every aspect of childhood and every type of book, toy, game and diversion. Over a period of 40 years, Iona and Peter Opie assembled a collection of 20,000 rare children's books, comics and other printed material. The Opie's also have a substantial collection of toys and games, most of them in mint condition and often still in their original packaging. Text on the early children's books, the classic Victorian illustrated books and the magazines and comics is provided by Brian Alderson, while Peter Opie's widow, Iona, and their son, Robert, examine the non-book items via themes. Iona Opie, together with her late husband, has published such books on children's literature as The Oxford Dictionary of Nursey Rhymes and The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren.
