Cicero Ten Orations and Selected Letters (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Cicero Ten Orations and Selected Letters For the last forty years there has been a growing tendency to load the text-book Of a Latin author with matter about the author and his times. The numerous American and foreign editions Of selections from Cicero's orations have undoubtedly been very useful and have reflected much credit upon the dili gence and scholarship Of the editors; but they have all fallen Short Of the ideal text-book as a means for the preparation Of assigned lessons. Some Of them, furnishing an abundance Of bibliographical and other material for the teacher's use, have been admirable from the teacher's standpoint and should be in every Latin teacher's library. Others have had excellent pictorial illustrations but such meager commentary as to leave the student unpiloted amid the rich flow Of Cicero's eloquence. TO let the author, after a complete but moderate introduction, interpret himself through suggestions Of his real meaning, given in adequate English, has seemed to the editors Of this edition the proper principle upon which to make the text-book Of a Latin author for American schools. Cicero the man, and not Cicero the historical figure surrounded by people with little or no interest for us, has been our chief concern. The aim in making this edition has been helpfulness toward an appreciation Of Cicero and Of such Of his literary work as we have been able to include in this school text-book. Too great a display Of borrowed or original erudition will, we hope, not be found anywhere between its covers. Ten Orations of Cicero

Book Description

Excerpt from Ten Orations of Cicero: With Selections From the Letters The Orations included in this edition are those which are most often required by the various colleges of this country. The selec tions from the Letters were made with special reference to their fitness for use as exercises in translation at sight they will at the same time give a glimpse of Cicero in his family life and in his relations with those to whom he was frank and outspoken. The variations from the text of Baiter and Kayser consist mainly in different punctuation, in writing the genitive singular of -z o-stems in -2 instead of 47, and in the treatment of bracketed passages, which in some cases have been received into the text, while others were removed altogether. For the sake of uniformity long vowels are marked as they appear in the Elementary Latin Dictionary of Charlton T. Lewis, except in cases which would require too much sacrifice of conviction. This book is intended to be 'very practical throughout, and in its preparation the sole aim has been to meet the needs of the preparatory students who would be likely to use it. An expression of appreciation is due Professor Lewis Stuart of Lake Forest University for his kindness in offering the use of a large amount of material which he had collected upon some of the subjects treated in the Introduction. Cicero Select Letters (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Cicero Select Letters To meet the demand for a brief volume of Cicero's letters, to be read in connection with Cicero's orations, the present selection of letters has been prepared and edited in accord with d'ooge's Select Orations of Cicero. While, in view of their purpose, the choice of selections has been limited to the easiest 'and plainest letters, yet the list will be found sufficiently extensive to include illustration of Cicero's most salient personal traits and many of the most prominent phases of his career. Owing to the close connection between this book and Professor d'ooge's Cicero, it has seemed necessary to include in the vocabulary only those words which do not appear in his vocabulary to the Orations. As these words appear for the first time in the text they are marked with a star to show that they have been 'placed in the vocabulary of this book. Selected Letters of Cicero (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero IN editing these selections from Cicero's correspondence, I have attempted to meet the needs of the Freshman who, when he enters college, is suffering from indifferent teaching. This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time. Selected Letters of Cicero

Book Description

Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero: Edited With Introduction and Notes Cicero's letters are of such wide range and varied interest that it is an exceptionally difficult task to edit a limited number which shall be fairly representative of the whole, and it is hoped that those readers who fail to find some of their favorite letters in this volume will bear this difficulty in mind. The editor has chosen in particular the letters which Cicero wrote to the members of his own family and to his intimate friends upon personal subjects, in the hope of throwing as much light as possible upon Cicero's private character, his tastes, his daily life, and his relations with his personal and literary friends. At the same time it is hoped that letters bearing upon political matters have been included in sufficient number to present a good outline of Cicero's public life and of his times. The letters are arranged chronologically. The text of the Epistulae ad familiares is that of Mendelssohn, with slight changes in a few passages generally recognized as corrupt and not readable. C. F. W. Muller's edition is the basis for the text of the Epistulae ad Quintum fratrem, and Wesenberg's for that of the Epistulae ad Atticum, Bks. I.-XI. and XIV.-XVI., but in very many cases the reading of the Medicean MS., which Wesenberg rejects, has been restored, and in certain other cases the more probable conjectures of Lehmann and others have been substituted for the emendations accepted by Wesenberg.
