Memorial to Congress on the Cultivation of the Cinchona Tree in the United States (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Memorial to Congress on the Cultivation of the Cinchona Tree in the United States There is no substitute for these. They are universally relied on for this purpose. In all countries, and at all periods, since the discovery of the properties of this invaluable and incomparable substance, amidst all the conflicting dogmas of different medical doctrines, Peruvian bark has never failed to sustain its reputation, and to answer the expectations that have rested upon it. Amidst the manifold uncertainties of medical science, and the perpetual contingencies of medical art; amidst the disheartening scientific infidelity which has lately been taking possession of the medical mind, shaking to its deepest foundations the firm old faith in the potency of drugs, and threatening to overturn and demolish it altogether, it is gratifying and consolatory to feel that here, at least, we stand upon solid ground; that here we may hold that there is one great and important therapeutical relationship definitely and positively ascertained and established, defying alike the open assaults of quackery from without, and the treacherous machina tions of indolent skepticism from within. - (bartlett on Fevers.) Review of Literature on Cinchona Diseases, Injuries, and Fungi (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Review of Literature on Cinchona Diseases, Injuries, and Fungi Several diseases that have been reported on cinchona can be classed as damping-off diseases, although the authors may not have used that name specifically in reference to them. Following is a discussion of fungi that have been reported to be associated with or to cause damping-off. Cinchona Root and Collar Rot in Peru and Bolivia (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Cinchona Root and Collar Rot in Peru and Bolivia In Bolivia it was recommended that formal nurseries be established to produce hardy planting stock andsthat land-clearing methods be modified to avoid the destruction of the topsoil and thus permit the abandoning of the hueco planting method. It has not been ossible to determine what practices are now in use in Bolivia or w at has been the result of them. In Peru the first changesrecommended and carried out were to level and transplant beds, cull the transplants, and remove the Soil from them before sending them to the field. Later, other recom mendations were followed as far as possible: To pile the logs and branches from the original cover into convenient gullies or to burn them in selected locations, instead of burning them on the planting sites; to plant only on gentle slopes and the t0ps of ridges, where good friable soil occurs; and to abandon the hueco. Method of planting and to plant the trees with the root system in the topsoil layers, with a slight mound around each tree. Study plots of about one-half acre each have been laid off in each of the following parts of the plantation: 1) Where, in 1943, the hueco method of planting had been used; (2) where, in 1944, the first bare rooted and selected transplants had been set, with some modification in the planting method, principally in the nursery; and (3) where, in 1945, the trees had been planted according to full recommendations as finally recommended. Losses in plots from the'first part are now 75 percent; from the second, 24 percent; and from the third, just under 20 percent. Of the 20-percent loss in, the last-named area, 15 percent occurred at or soon after planting. Selections made for disease resistance show promise, but until they are clonally propagated and proved under all con ditions they cannot b'e'consi'dered to be posi tive in their resistance. The Medical Eclectic, Vol. 6

Book Description

Excerpt from The Medical Eclectic, Vol. 6: January 15, 1879 The demand. For quinine increased, but the supplies of cincho na bark more than kept pace with this demand, and the price Of quinine sulphate declined from several dollars to per ounce, when the Peruvian government conceived the purpose Of making cinchona bark a government monopoly, because at that period our supply of calisaya or quinine bark, yielding not less than two and a half per cent Of quinia, was supplied by the sin gle South American port Of Callao. At that period two and a half per cent. Was considered to be the minimum at which cin chona bark could be successfully treated for quinine, and an arrangement was made with English capitalists for advances on shipments. The crude bark was controlled and so managed that the price Of sulphate Of quinine was gradually advanced in the American market until it reached per ounce. This monopoly, however, like most arrangements of the sort, could not be continued for a long period. The increased price brought into use better methods Of process in manufacture, and it was found that lower grades of bark, yielding less than two per cent., could be used with profit for the manufacture of quinine. The enormous development of the manufacture of quinine in our country dates from this period, as our market has always been well supplied with the cheaper grades Of bark, and but sparingly with the more valuable varieties. At the present time it is usually difficult to Obtain in the American market cin chona barks that will yield much above two per cent. Of quinia.
