Book Description

This document is a printed petition, with some handwritten elements, dated May 1, 1795 and containing the appeal of citizens of Richmond County, Georgia to the state assembly relative to the Yazoo land deals. This petition, instituted by order of the Mechanical Society of Augusta, articulates various reasons that the recent sale of so-called "unlocated" lands within the territory of Georgia is fraudulent and should be considered null and void. Part of the argument rests on the assertion that the method of the sale, particularly the extinguishment of Indian claims to the "unlocated" lands, has no legal precedent.
