The book brings together experts in the field of Urban Climatic Mapping to provide the state of the art understanding on how urban climatic knowledge can be made available and utilized by urban planners. The book contains the technology, methodology, and various focuses and approaches of urban climatic map making. It illustrates this understanding with examples and case studies from around the world, and it explains how urban climatic information can be analysed, interpreted and applied in urban planning. The book attempts to bridge the gap between the science of urban climatology and the practice of urban planning. Directions in Strong Motion Instrumentation

Book Description

Strong ground motion measuring and recording instruments play a major role in mitigation of seismic risk. The strong ground motion near the source of an earthquake describes the effects that endanger our built environment, and is also the most detailed clue concerning the source mechanism of the earthquake. The range of complexity that engulfs our understanding of the source parameters of a major earthquake (extent of the source mechanism, stress drop, wave propagation patterns) and how buildings and other works of construction respond to ground-transmitted dynamic effects may be overpowered by improved direct observations. Strong motion seismographs provide the information that enables scientists and engineers to resolve the many issues that are intertwined with practical problems of building safe communities worldwide. They may be installed as arrays close to major fault zones, consisting of many instruments arranged in some geometrical pattern, or in the vicinity and mounted on buildings. This book, which contains papers by invited authorities, represents a unique interaction between seismologists and earthquake engineers who examine issues of mutual concern in an overlapping area of major interest. The papers have been grouped around three major areas. -Seismic Hazard and Extreme Motions -Engineering Uses of Strong Motion Seismograms -Arrays and Observations.

Tokyo

Book Description

The Tokyo region of Japan is, in terms of population, the largest urban area on earth. Its centre comprises the 23 wards of Tokyo itself but the urban sprawl has long since extended to include the other major cities of Kawasaki and Yokohama. From the early 16th century, when the Tokugawa rulers of Japan established their administrative headquarters there, Edo, as it was known, developed quickly into one of the largest cities in the world. It was renamed Tokyo, or 'Eastern Capital', when the Emperor moved there in 1868. In the 20th century most of Tokyo was destroyed first by the Kanto earthquake of 1923 and then by the American bombing of 1945. Nonetheless, it was rapidly rebuilt, and is now, along with London and New York, one of the major control centres of the global economy. Yet behind the ultramodern facade of the main commercial areas, Tokyo remains largely a city of narrow streets and small, intimate neighbourhoods. However, the threat of serious earthquakes remains and the relocation of the capital is being increasingly discussed. This is the first annotated, critical survey of the English-language literature on Tokyo and its region.

My Yokohama: The Local Travel Guide to Yokohama, Japan

Book Description

Just thirty minutes from Tokyo, and set along a spectacular bay waterfront, Yokohama hits different. It’s easygoing, free-swinging, even a bit decadent. Yokohama received Japan’s first foreign influences, and it was the origin of everything from Japanese jazz culture to the fashion aesthetic of Plastic Love. At the same time, Yokohama is more set in its ways than Tokyo, less mercurial, and more staidly Japanese. Sleepy 1960s soda shops that simply couldn’t stay in business in Tokyo still thrive in Yokohama, as do the octogenarians who patronize them. And for the cost of a hostel or a capsule in Tokyo, you can stay in a nice three-star hotel in Yokohama. Yokohama is a perfect introduction for a first-time visitor to Japan. It’s a lot more manageable than Tokyo, but it’s still a city of three million people with its own techno-urban vibe. It can also be a level-up for the visitor who’s already seen Tokyo and Osaka, and wants to go beyond the obvious destinations and to a city where tourists seldom tread. Yokohama is a beyond-the-obvious kind of city, and I’ll show you the beyond-the-obvious in Yokohama. Yes, there are the ramen museums and shopping malls that every guidebook knows about. But I’ll take you farther: to local shopping streets and markets, jazz clubs and listening bars where you’re almost forced to make new friends, tiny sushi bars and izakayas, hidden-away coffee shops, and long-forgotten attractions that only locals visit. We’ll explore the complex, layered, local Yokohama. The one that’s not in Tripadvisor. The one my Japanese friends and colleagues have described and shown to me over the years. The one that made me fall in love with Yokohama — My Yokohama.
