The Religion of the Future, Or Outlines of Spiritual Philosophy (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Religion of the Future, or Outlines of Spiritual Philosophy 1. A new and glorious science of man, of his origin and destiny, has been developed within the last few decades. A new philosophy has been evolved of human life here and hereafter, based upon demonstrated facts and data accessible to all. Stupendous as the science of objective nature has become, it is as the mere shadow thrown upon the canvas of time and matter by the radiant light of immortal spirit. Modern agnosticism had set up a way-mark on the road of human progression, inscribed: "No thoroughfare!" "Unknowable!" The truths most indispensable for man to know, the destiny of man and the immortality of the soul, were declared absolute mysteries. What ought to have merely been designated as unknown was declared to be unknowable. This way-mark has to be removed. It is now seen that the doctrine of the Relativity of Knowledge, as formulated by the Kantian school of modem philosophical thought, misled men into too hasty generalizations and unwarrantable conclusions. It needed only the right method to find the way out; it required only the right key to open wondrous realms to the astonished gaze. Again the supremacy of mind is restored; the saying is verified that "there is nothing on earth great but man, and in man there is nothing great but mind." Evolution and Spiritual Life (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Evolution and Spiritual Life Comparatively little detailed consideration is given in the present book to the conclusions of particular schools of philosophy, except where a reference to one system or another has seemed desirable for the purpose of illustrating a definite point. William James justly complains that The abuse of technicality is seen in the infrequency with which, in philosophical literature, metaphysical questions are discussed directly on their own merits. Almost always they are handled, as if through a heavy woollen curtain, the veil of pre vious philosophers' opinions. Alternatives are wrapped in proper names, as if it were indecent for a truth to go naked. I have tried, rather, to work from point to point, handling everything with bare fingers, and only discovering by touch the shape of each lump of fact and its contacts with the next. And the shapes and contacts of some were unexpected. But clothes are ornamental; and these ornaments we have come to consider essential to decency. There fore, both for the sake of our ideas of what is suitable, and to escape arrest by the police who guard our thoughts, I have decked the body of my work with more or less of the usual habiliments 1. Interpretation of the Spiritual Philosophy

Book Description

Excerpt from Interpretation of the Spiritual Philosophy Nothing strikes me as more remarkable about the reviews and criticisms of my book on Spiritual Philosophy than their wonderful diversity. According to some of my critics, the book contained nothing new or worthy of notice. According to others, there was subject-matter in it which called for lengthy and careful consideration. I thank them all for honouring me with their notice, but I shall beg to be excused from replying to their criticisms, with one exception. It is that which several of my reviewers have made; to the effect that my treatment of the subject, considering its magnitude and importance, and the number of questions and side issues it opens out, was too brief and sketchy. I must plead guilty to the charge. It is quite true that my book was little more than a suggestive outline of the vast subject I ventured to discuss. But I would add in self-justification, that at a time when not only Civilization, but Philosophy and Religion are at the cross-roads, I felt it very important that the claims of the Spiritual Philosophy should not be overlooked. After Dogmatic Theology, What?

Book Description

Excerpt from After Dogmatic Theology, What?: Materialism, or a Spiritual Philosophy and Natural Religion For England say America, and these calm words of timely warning will apply here as well. No mountain range or sea can bar or check the progress of this liberal opinion, the tendency of which, here as across the broad Atlantic, is to reject the miraculous religion of tradition as unsound and untenable.
