An Elementary Handbook on Potable Water (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Elementary Handbook on Potable Water As an analytical and consulting chemist, the author of this handbook is frequently called upon to give information on the subject of water in its relations to disease. Two bulletins from his pen on this subject have already been issued by the Iowa State Board of Health, for the benefit of the public; and from the favor with which they have been received, he has been induced to prepare the present treatise, designed especially for the use of physicians, sanitarians, and chemists. It is hoped that the subject is presented in a sufficiently interesting manner to be worthy of their study, and that the facts are expressed in scientific language capable of being easily understood by every intelligent person. The impurities in drinking-water that arc oftenest the cause of disease and death are discussed here. The natural and artificial processes of removing them from water are also given due consideration. But all methods of analysis are avoided, except some of the elementary qualitative tests given in the appendix. Water-Analysis

Book Description

Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
