Literature Search and Research Design Amite River and Tributaries Project Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Livingston Parishes, Louisiana

Book Description

A literature search, and reconnaissance level archeological and architectural survey was conducted of portions of the Amite Basin, in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Livingston Parishes, Louisiana. The project was conducted to provide historical and archeological data necessary for completing feasibility studies of flood control measures. The projects under consideration include channel improvements to the Amite River and 10 tributaries, seven levees, and the Comite River Diversion Channel. The literature search included examination of the historic development of the region, and emphasized identification of anticipated archeological site locations within the project areas under study. In addition, previous archeological investigations and previously recorded archeological sites were examined. The field reconnaissance involved examination of areas along project corridors for cultural resources, and recordation of geomorphological and cultural data. Approximately 230 acres were surveyed. Based on the literature and field reconnaissance, recommendations are made for further testing in the project areas.
