Error Analysis in the World. A Bibliography

Book Description

Linguistic errors are manifold, e.g. in the mother tongue, in the acquisition of foreign languages, in translations, as slip of the tongue or typo. The present compilation of all subject-related publications is a comprehensive bibliography for the field of linguistic errors. In a compact introduction, Bernd Spillner additionally provides an overview of linguistic, didactic and psycholinguistic methods of the analysis and assessment of the errors and their therapy. For the first time, publications from numerous countries around the world were included which have not yet been considered. With the attached CD-ROM making the bibliography searchable for keywords in many languages to find relevant publications among the more than 6.000 titles, this is a very useful handbook for all linguists and teachers.

Guided error correction. Exercises for advanced Spanish-speaking learners of English. Book 2.

Book Description

This book is the result of years of experience teaching English to Spanish undergraduates studying for a degree in English Language and Literature. The focus of the book reflects the assumption that a large majority of the mistakes made by advanced-level learners are the result of interference from their native language. The approach adopted in this book is based on the idea that correcting one's own mistakes involves two separate operations, namely, first recognising the error as such and then providing the correction for it. In the first two thirds of the book, errors are explicitly identified for the learner, whose task is simply to correct the errors. In the final third, however, learners must carry out both operations. lt is this two-step approach that the term «guided error correction» tries to reflect. In order to provide sufficient practice, each of the errors -ali characteristic of Spanish-speakers learning English- occurs on six separate occasions in the book. In addition, the book includes a section of brief explanatory notes at the back of the book where each of the errors is explained, with Spanish translations provided to enhance comprehension of nuances in meaning. These notes are cross-referenced with each error in the exercises for handy referral, but at the same time represent in themselves a compact reference source for common errors. This book will be useful for advanced-level Spanish-speaking learners of English in any context, though it has been designed primarily not for systematic consecutive classroom use but rather as a series of self-correcting one-page exercises that can be pursued sporadically at the learner's convenience. This book is part of a series of three books

Great English Mistakes

Book Description

A light-hearted, yet thoroughly professional, description of typical mistakes made by Spanish speakers of English with explanations of how to avoid and correct them. In 24 years of teaching English in Barcelona, I have a heard and read a great number of mistakes. The purpose of this compilation is to present them in a way that will make an impact on the reader, who will then learn to avoid them. Clearly, mistakes must be identified and corrected. This book is written in English, but it does not require a high language level to be understood. It is intended for a general public. Technical terminology has been kept to a minimum (though standard phonetic symbols are used to show pronunciation) and the style is light and humorous, with anecdotes that are a true reflection of mistakes that are made by Spanish-speakers. There are two pages of the typical mistakes made by Catalan-speakers. In almost 30 years of teaching English in Barcelona, I have a heard and read a great number of mistakes. REVIEWS An easy-to-read and user-friendly book ... grammar receives careful attention ... may benefit both intermediate and advanced students of English ... Teachers of English may also find it useful. TESOL Spain Newsletter While [this book] is clearly aimed at the Spanish-speaking learner of English it is also valuable for the teacher of English working in a Spanish-speaking environment ... [it highlights] many of the false friends which exist ... Translations show the learner what words do, and, equally importantly, do not mean ... with a wealth of real-life examples which are sometimes humorous, the book is very readable ... There is certainly a gap in the market for such a book ... of all the many English language books I have on my bookshelf, this is the only one that has a long waiting list of Spanish-speaking friends wanting to borrow it.
