WHO compendium of innovative health technologies for low-resource settings 2024

Book Description

Access to appropriate, affordable, effective, and safe health technologies is paramount, especially in low-resource settings, where burden of non-communicable diseases adds on to the infectious diseases. NCDs account for a staggering 74% of global deaths, with 86% of premature fatalities occurring in resource-constrained regions. Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory conditions, and diabetes collectively contribute to over 80% of these premature NCD-related deaths. Addressing this challenge requires targeted interventions and innovative solutions tailored to LMICs. The 2024 Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for low-resource settings includes commercially available solutions and prototypes. This 7th edition showcases 21 technologies, each with a full assessment. It also includes updates for technologies previously featured in previous compendia editions. Assessments include clinical aspects, relation to WHO technical specifications, regulatory compliance, criteria on health technology assessment and health technology management, local production viability, and intellectual property considerations. Beyond presenting these innovations, the Compendium serves as a catalyst for increased interaction among stakeholders—ministries of health, procurement officers, donors, developers, biomedical engineers, clinicians, and users. By providing evidence-based assessments and relevant information, it aims to drive use of innovative health technology and expand global access, particularly for low-resource settings for populations in need.

Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for Low-Resource Settings (PDF)

Book Description

One of the cornerstones of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiative is access to essential medicines andhealth technologies. Medical devices assistive devices and eHealth solutions are important components ofhealth technology which have the potential to save lives and improve quality of life and well-being. However too many people worldwide suffer because they don't have access to high quality affordable health technologywith the problem being more acute in low- and middle-income countries. the objective of the compendium series of innovative medical devices assistive devices and eHealth solutionsis to provide a neutral platform for technologies which are likely to be suitable for use in less resourcedsettings. It presents a snapshot of several health technologies which might have the potential to improvehealth outcomes and the quality of life or to offer a solution to an unmet medical/health technology need.It is released to acknowledge some success stories and at the same time to raise awareness of the pressingneed for appropriate and affordable design solutions and to encourage more innovative efforts in the field. This effort also aims to encourage greater interaction among ministries of health procurement officers donors technology developers manufacturers clinicians academics and the general public to ensure greaterinvestment in health technology and to move towards universal access to essential health technologies. All submissions to the 'Call for innovative health technologies for low-resource settings' underwent anevaluation process; technologies were assessed by an expert panel based on the material and evidenceprovided by the applicant as well as publicly available information. in 2013 unlike previous years inclusion inthe Compendium for medical devices was restricted to commercialized products with regulatory approval.Note that for a selected technology the inclusion in the compendium does not constitute a warranty forfitness of the technology for a particular purpose. All innovative solutions in the compendium are presented in one page summarizing the health problemaddressed the proposed solution and product specifications based on data information and images providedby the developers of the technologies concerned.

Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation - Intersections between Public Health, Intellectual Property and Trade

Technologies for Development

Book Description

The book presents case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America addressing global development issues in the fields of health, energy, ICT and urbanism in an interdisciplinary way. The book illustrates key issues at the interface of technology, human, social, and economic development. Bringing together the best papers of the 2014 EPFL-UNESCO Conference on Technologies for Development, this book explores innovative technologies in the global South. It will be a valuable reference for researchers from engineering, natural sciences, information management, quantitative social sciences, and business faculties, as well as for development practitioners and policy makers. It shows the development potential of technologies, and discusses successful processes to develop and deploy them, as well how to evaluate their impact. The introduction to the book begins with a reflection on key issues regarding technologies for development. The following four sections focus on; (i) Innovative Technologies for Development, (ii) Open Source-Open Access-Open Innovation, (iii) Medical Technologies for the Global South, and (iv) Impact Assessment of Technologies for Development. Individual chapters explore issues such as a need for solid standards for newly developed technologies, how to successfully up-scale technology to a larger region, and how to involve private industry in the development of a technology.

Global Health Watch 4

Book Description

Global Health Watch, now in its fourth edition, is widely perceived as the definitive voice for an alternative discourse on health and healthcare. It covers a range of issues that currently impact on health, including the present political and economic architecture in a fast-changing and globalized world; a political assessment of the drive towards Universal Health Coverage; broader determinants of health, such as gender-based violence and access to water; stories of struggles, actions and change; and a scrutiny of a range of global institutions and processes.
