This volume aims to furnish a broader framework for analyzing the scientific and institutional context that gave rise to scientific academies in Europe—including the Accademia del Cimento in Florence; the Royal Society in London; the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris; and the Academia naturae curiosorum in Schweinfurt. The essays detail the multiple backgrounds that prompted seventeenth-century savants—from Italy to England, and from Poland to Portugal—to establish new forms of scientific organizations, in which to institutionalize collaborative research as well as modes of communication with like-minded individuals and associations.

As genetics becomes increasingly important in our everyday environment, misinterpretation of its scientific foundation leads to mixed feelings of hope and fear about the potential of its applications. Trajectories of Genetics uncovers the many facets of genetics - from humans to animals, plants, and the microscopic world through more than a century of scientific progress. It summarizes the evolution of ideas as the organization and functioning of genetic material has become clearer. The book analyzes how genetic information transmitted from generation to generation in nucleic acids enables the fulfillment of biological functions and the evolution of the living world. It illustrates current developments in many areas: the improvement of species of agronomic interest, an increased understanding of microbial worlds, the management of genetic pathologies and the synthesis of new forms of life.

K.R. McClay Department of Geology, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, Egham, Surrey, England TW20 OEX. Since the first Thrust and Nappe Tectonics Conference in London in 1979 (McClay & Price 1981), and the Toulouse Meeting on Thrusting and Deformation in 1984 (Platt et al. 1986) there have been considerable advances in the study of thrust systems incorporating new field observations, conceptual models, mechanical models, analogue and numerical simulations, together with geophysical studies of thrust belts. Thrust Tectonics 1990 was an International Conference convened by the editor and held at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, Egham Surrey, from April 4th until April 7th 1990. There were one hundred and seventy participants from all continents except South America. The conference was generously sponsored by Brasoil U.K. Limited, BP Exploration, Chevron U.K. Limited, Clyde Petroleum, Enterprise Oil, Esso Exploration and Production UK Limited, and Shell U.K. Exploration and Production. One hundred and five contributions were presented at the meeting, - seventy six oral presentations (together with poster displays) and an additional twenty nine posters without oral presentation (McClay 1990, conference abstract volume).

Contributed in honour of Lucien Le Cam on the occasion of his 70th birthday, the papers reflect the immense influence that his work has had on modern statistics. They include discussions of his seminal ideas, historical perspectives, and contributions to current research - spanning two centuries with a new translation of a paper of Daniel Bernoulli. The volume begins with a paper by Aalen, which describes Le Cams role in the founding of the martingale analysis of point processes, and ends with one by Yu, exploring the position of just one of Le Cams ideas in modern semiparametric theory. The other 27 papers touch on areas such as local asymptotic normality, contiguity, efficiency, admissibility, minimaxity, empirical process theory, and biological medical, and meteorological applications - where Le Cams insights have laid the foundations for new theories.

The purpose of this paper is to empirically determine the effects of political instability on economic growth. Using the system-GMM estimator for linear dynamic panel data models on a sample covering up to 169 countries, and 5-year periods from 1960 to 2004, we find that higher degrees of political instability are associated with lower growth rates of GDP per capita. Regarding the channels of transmission, we find that political instability adversely affects growth by lowering the rates of productivity growth and, to a smaller degree, physical and human capital accumulation. Finally, economic freedom and ethnic homogeneity are beneficial to growth, while democracy may have a small negative effect.
