Physical and Computational Aspects of Convective Heat Transfer

Book Description

This volume is concerned with the transport of thermal energy in flows of practical significance. The temperature distributions which result from convective heat transfer, in contrast to those associated with radiation heat transfer and conduction in solids, are related to velocity characteristics and we have included sufficient information of momentum transfer to make the book self-contained. This is readily achieved because of the close relation ship between the equations which represent conservation of momentum and energy: it is very desirable since convective heat transfer involves flows with large temperature differences, where the equations are coupled through an equation of state, as well as flows with small temperature differences where the energy equation is dependent on the momentum equation but the momentum equation is assumed independent of the energy equation. The equations which represent the conservation of scalar properties, including thermal energy, species concentration and particle number density can be identical in form and solutions obtained in terms of one dependent variable can represent those of another. Thus, although the discussion and arguments of this book are expressed in terms of heat transfer, they are relevant to problems of mass and particle transport. Care is required, however, in making use of these analogies since, for example, identical boundary conditions are not usually achieved in practice and mass transfer can involve more than one dependent variable.

This monograph provides state-of-the-art theoretical results in a systematic treatment of convective and advective heat transfer during fluid flow in geological systems at the crustal scale.

Finite Element Analysis In Heat Transfer

Book Description

This introductory text presents the applications of the finite element method to the analysis of conduction and convection problems. The book is divided into seven chapters which include basic ideas, application of these ideas to relevant problems, and development of solutions. Important concepts are illustrated with examples. Computer problems are also included to facilitate the types of solutions discussed.

This book presents the solutions of homework problems described in my book "Convective Heat Transfer." The book also has a CD which contains computer programs to solve homework problems. Included on the CD are computer programs based on integral methods for solving momentum and heat transfer problems in external flows.

Advanced Computational Methods and Experiments in Heat Transfer X

Book Description

In engineering design and development, reliable and accurate computational methods are requested to replace or complement expensive and time consuming experimental trial and error work. Tremendous advancements have been achieved during recent years due to improved numerical solutions of non-linear partial differential equations and computer developments to achieve efficient and rapid calculations. Nevertheless, to further progress in computational methods will require developments in theoretical and predictive procedures – both basic and innovative – and in applied research. Accurate experimental investigations are needed to validate the numerical calculations. This book contains the edited versions of the papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Advanced Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements in Heat Transfer and Mass Transfer held in Maribor, Slovenia in July 2008. The objective of this conference series is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of advanced topics, new approaches and application of advanced computational methods and experimental measurements to heat and mass transfer problems. The contributed papers are grouped in the following appropriate sections to provide better access for readers: Natural and forced convection; Heat exchangers; Advances in computational methods; Heat recovery; Heat transfer; Modelling and experiments.

Computational Analysis of Convection Heat Transfer

Book Description

A collection of reviews of methodology in the computational analysis of convection heat transfer, together with important applications from engineering. Perspectives are given on boundary element methodology, the finite element version of the stream function-vorticity formulation and stabilization techniques for finite element solutions, while another chapter deals with the possibility of obtaining analytical solutions via algebraic manipulators. With regard to applications, developments in modelling of solidification processes are presented, and approaches to natural convection in open channels, combined convection in horizontal flows and forced convection in ducts are also covered. Finally, the perfection of modern numerical modalities is demonstrated by a chapter on the thermal analysis of anti-icing devices for aircraft wings.
