This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 30th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS 2005, held in Gdansk, Poland in August/September 2005. The 62 revised full papers presented together with full papers or abstracts of 7 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 137 submissions. All current aspects in theoretical computer science are addressed, ranging from quantum computing, approximation, automata, circuits, scheduling, games, languages, discrete mathematics, combinatorial optimization, graph theory, networking, algorithms, and complexity to programming theory, formal methods, and mathematical logic.

Computer algebra systems are gaining importance in all areas of science and engineering. This textbook gives a thorough introduction to the algorithmic basis of the mathematical engine in computer algebra systems. It is designed to accompany one- or two-semester courses for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in computer science or mathematics. Its comprehensiveness and authority also make it an essential reference for professionals in the area. Special features include: detailed study of algorithms including time analysis; implementation reports on several topics; complete proofs of the mathematical underpinnings; a wide variety of applications (among others, in chemistry, coding theory, cryptography, computational logic, and the design of calendars and musical scales). Some of this material has never appeared before in book form. For the new edition, errors have been corrected, the text has been smoothed and updated, and new sections on greatest common divisors and symbolic integration have been added.

This text provides a guide to dealing with 3-manifolds by computers. Its emphasis is on presenting algorithms which are used for solving (in practice) the homeomorphism problem for the smallest of these objects. The key concept is the 3-gem, a special kind of edge-colored graph, which encodes the manifold via a ball complex. Passages between 3-gems and more standard presentations like Heegaard diagrams and surgery descriptions are provided. A catalogue of all closed orientable 3-manifolds induced by 3-gems up to 30 vertices is included. In order to help the classification, various invariants are presented, including the new quantum invariants.
